'97 Kick stalling - please help!
« on: April 19, 2007, 10:22:39 AM »
I'm driving along on the freeway yesterday and I hear "BUZZZZZZZZ" come out of my radio... which I turn off... then 'all hell breaks loose'...   >:(

I the truck hesitates in short bursts - feels like a cylinder is misfiring. Turn signal indicators aren't working, my radio is now dead, and my dash & headlights are dimmer. Coming off the freeway, my truck stalls immediately after I push in the clutch. Bump start - push in clutch, engine promptly dies again. If I keep the throttle pressed in a little, the engine will rev and run just fine. When I got home and tried to restart, I heard the 'click' of the starter sylinoid (SP?) doing it's thing, but there's NO engine turn at all. Acts like a very low battery or a short?

History:
I purchased this a month ago. In the paperwork, it shows two different times it's been in the dealership for stalling. One time they changed the alternator (about a year and a half ago), and one time they adjusted the clutch cable (about 6 months ago). It recently had both CO2 censors replaced to pass smog (about 6 weeks ago).

I noticed the vehicle was running very rough at stop lights over the last couple weeks (dropping in RPM and running poorly) - I went to check the idler control valve, but when I popped the hood I couldn't tell which part was the idler control valve. I also pulled a bad speaker out of the back last week (been looking for replacement), and noticed the bare speaker wire was making contact with the body of the truck - possible short? (rough idling happened prior to the speaker removal). I moved the wire away from body, but truck still 'clicks' without turning over engine.

Not sure if there's a short somewhere, a bad idler control valve, something else, or any combination. I'm really at a loss - not sure how to isolate the problems. I have another vehicle I can borrow a battery / jump start from.

Please help!  :-\

Check how it goes with a known good battery, it sounds like it is only running on the alternator. If the battery is bad then check that you have good connections on both the battery positive and the grounds.

The battery looks brand new, but I'll trade / try to jump with my Celia and see what happens.

Trace your wires under your hood and see if any are loose. You might have a bad ground somewhere or a short. The only way to find out is to look, though.

Make sure to check your wires on your starter and alternator.

You might also have a bad alternator. If your alternator goes bad, it will do funny things, and since it's not charging the battery any more, your battery may have run down, and will no longer start your truck.

I'd suggest taking it out and taking it to a local auto parts store to have it tested.

I suspected it was:
The battery
Alternator
A short / bad connection somewhere

I took jumper cables to the battery, and let it charge off my celica - took cables off - Kick started fine. Ran it for a while with radio on, and lights on bright. It didn't take long to re-drain the battery. This told me:
1) The battery would take a charge, so it was probably fine.
2) The battery isn't getting charged

I then had a friend hook up a multimeter to the battery (11.9v) and started tracker up (12.4v) so... it's probably the alternator (checked connections, they seem good)... which is a total bitch to take off. And, so is the belt in front of it that runs the power steering & A/C. Really, the only way I can think of to get the bolts loose (especially on the A/C) is to pull the radiator  :o

Since I have 115k miles on her, and the belts could use replacing anyway... I'm just going to do the whole 120k mile service / pull radiator / change timing belt & watter pump all at once. May as well get it all done at once since it's such a PITA to get those belts off.

Thank goodness I have my Celica :)

Don;t forget to adjust the valves while you're at it too ...

It sounds like the diodes in the alternator (a few of them)went out and is putting ac into the battery and system(buzzing sound in speaker).
