Why you shouldn't wheel alone
« on: November 27, 2004, 02:11:36 PM »
Today I went to an ORP that is new this year and not too far from me.  A friend went with me in the truck, but we only had one truck.  I thought I would hook up with someone at the park.  When I got there I was the only truck there.  I wanted to see the park so I figured I would just take it easy.  The problem was that it has rained for the last day and was very slick.  As long as the trail was flat I did fine.  When I got into an off camber situation I got stuck.  Eventually an Olds Bravada came along with a winch.  I was sweating it for awhile.  I think I will stick to my clubs outings so that we have someone along with recovery equipment.

That's why I went with adding and upgrading recovery equipment before getting the lift and tires on...

You ought to get at least a couple straps and a come-along to carry with you...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

Yeah its kinda like going swiming alone. At least with someone else along they can pull or push ya,or point to the last mud hole they saw you enter so the rescue workers can start dragging the bottom! ;D ;D ;D M.Z.

i often go wheeling by myself (single vehicle), and yes, i do have a snatch, rated for 8 tonnes, plenty for my vit, but more so for pulling other bigger trucks out.

anyway, i have learnt over time why it is that you shouldn't go wheeling on your own, and the first time comes to mind, when i got stuck in some slippery stuff, and had to walk about 15km back to civilisation to find someone capable enough to get to where i was, and who would be able to pull me out.

so i'd rather find someone else to come along, or not go at all, saves me all the excercise.

a hi lift jack also makes a great companion...  ;D

I've done that before in my XJ.  I had just finished putting my new lights on, and wanted to test them out on a trail.  So me and my brother start off down the trail.  It goes down hill, and then curves to the right.  Well, as I go around the bend, the rear-end slides on the mud(it was raining) and off into a little rut with slick stuff in it.  I should have gone through that with no problem...Until I realized I had no 4wd.  Yep, just an open-diff rear-end trying to push me through some slippery mud.  Needless to say, I was stuck.  If I had 4wd, the front tire would have dug through this little mound that was acting like a wheel chuck.  So, it's 10:30 or so at night...Dark, rainy and cold, and I'm stuck out on a trail.  I realized my dad would kill me if I called him saying I was stuck.  So, I had my brother climb behind the wheel and threw it in reverse.  I went up front and started pushing.  I was actually able to push it out of the rut, and help it reverse back up the hill.  I jumped back in and away we went...That's why I love light trucks.  If it had been some big blazer that I got stuck, I would have been screwed...

By the way, I'm new here.  r0ckstarr brought me over here, since I'm looking into a Samurai.

Okay maybe not nearby.  I went to Cliff's in Marsellis.  It is about 75 miles from me.  If the weather had been dry it would have been a great trip.  I still had fun even with getting stuck and damaging my truck. :(
