Make my tracker a on/offroad beast within warranty
« on: November 12, 2004, 04:52:50 AM »
Here is the spec's on my 03's

I bought new in 04'
was to be a designiated fleet vehcile I purchased using my employee purchase plan (I work at EDS, which was a subsiduary of GM)
got it cheap
real cheap, but had nothing, not even a deck or a/c
No options  (.)
just wipers :)
no door locks, power nothing
not even floor mats
and just a standard 5x
Is a 4x4 however, and is the LX series
but hey it only costed in USD $11250 w/ 0% financing for 48 months hehe

The only mods I've put in is a panasonic deck (as it did come 4 x 6 1/2" :) ), floor mats, and some tires
as I posted before
235/75/15 on stock rims from katona tires
here is a pic of the vehical

already really impressed by the stock performance of the vehicle offroad
Always in the quest of longing for more
as I have no lift at all, you can see that the wheel well if quite filled up
However I haven't bottomed yet (i guess i go slowly enough through most obsticals)

I still have 3 years of warranty left
now as situation goes
there is tons of stuff RRO and Calmini I see that I want
what can I get  mechanically/Suspension that won't really void the warranty all that much?

I was told by my dealer that a BL shouldn't really void warranty
I really wanted to order the suspension lift, but I can live without it if I can get 2" of BL and 1" of suspenion using coil spacers from RRO
However i'm concerned about having to extend the shifters for both the transfer case and the 5 speed? anyone have bad/good experiences?

I live in Winnipeg and we get a heck of a lot of snow and yearly we will have a couple days where basically no vehicals can get out
well I want this vehicle to be able to get me anywhere
as being on call all the time requires me to get to my site locations asap

I was thinking of buying some tire chains in those circumstances
however I would like some kind of traction aid
and the LSD appears the best all around for on-road use and off road
though I do prefer to "giver" offroad, honestly of all myst 150000 miles, i'd say close to 80% or more were made commuting from work and back

The calmini LSD is from suzuki right? so if I get like our suzuki dealer to install the approved part... that unit should likewise be warranted?

so I think a BL and suspenion lift should lift 3" for the wheels, is adiquate
Tire size is good as it doesn't appear to affect performance too badly from those crappy uniroyal tiger crap
may not be big enough for serious offroading but appaears to do the trick for most unmanned roads
and just a rear lsd

skid plates on the other hand I Cannot seem to find for this vehicle, anyone know if the skid plates from previous Geo's will fit?

and thanks for advice in advance

Generally, in the USA that is, the warranty is voided only if the dealer can show that a mod contibuted to the failure. So, a BL won't void a thrown rod in the engine (unless the dealer can show that the rod failure was a result of the BL). (the classic example is a custom stereo install doesn't void the drivetrain warranty).

I'd say do a BL, and perhaps spacers. Just be prepared to deal with your mods causing problems (but if *you* do them carefully, *you* know what was done).
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.

With those tires you have now, I'd first check to see if the chains would interfere with the body now while it's still dry with no need for them. It would be a real PITA to find that you need to use them, and they don't fit!!!! or damage the body!!!

As for a body lift, don't go too high (1-1.5" with 2" max if at all) you'll have to be concerned of the rack and pinion steering you have. The shaft is not supported beyond the firewall to the rack on the frame. Take a look and have someone rotate the steering wheel while you are watching. The total shaft length could probably be adjusted at the adapter just off the firewall (I'm hoping to install a 1.5" bl on my -7). Then move onto the next obstacle, the brake lines. The front lines are mounted to the interior frame cage of the body. Simple enough to disconnect, and relocate, but then you need to bleed them afterwards...that's just as simple. Just don't forget. The higher you go up in bl, the more the bumper covers won't fit, not to forget the front inner splash well.

As for the suspension, adding a small spacer is the easiest to do. However, take a look at how much droop you have on the strut. Measure the coil distance from static as well as measure the strut distance. Now raise the frame to where the coil has expanded say 1.5" (as if there was a 1.5" spacer). Now remeasure the strut, if the tire is off the ground, then you either exceeded the struts expansion, or you are right on it. This means no droop and possible damage to strut. You'll need to configure a way to drop the upper brackets. Your '04 has a brace across the engine for the upper brackets, so it won't be real easy like just flipping them. I'm configuring a flat plate to which mounts the older Trackick version to the stock brackets. The older Trackick brackets are 1.5" lower in height and are overall smaller in size.
The rear suspension is the easiest to add a spacer and longer shock. Just make sure you watch the rear brake line and the parking line for tension. This would mean too much droop from the shock.
Then once all these spacers are added, check out the cycling of the axles/tires for body contact. Remove the coil on one corner and raise the tire into full contact with the bump stop. Extending them is as easy as adding a square block. Or, like me, add a Jeep bump stop riser on the rear axle by drilling a hole in the center of the pad. For the front, use adhesive to secure a spacer to the cast front control arm. If it ever comes loose, it'll be too big to cause any problems as the coil has little space between the coils.
For skid plates, the ZR2 version of the Tracker has stock skid plates.

BTW, think you get another like yours, in red, 2wd? I have a pair of Toyota cases to use.

Do a search for a snorkle and you'll find the messages. Basically, it goes up the passenger side A-pillar, then looks like a cap on the roof. They don't particularly provide something like a 'normal' snorkle.

Technically, the only risk to the warranty is in the area that you make changes.  If you change the suspension, only the suspension portion of the warranty is void.

In reallity, If you change ANYTHING and the dealership or the manufacturer can, in any way, blame problems on your modification, you are at the mercy of the dealership.

You have already change tires to a more aggressive tread.  They have a higher rolling resistance which means more load on the engine.  It would be immoral, but not unconcievable that warranty work would be denied you.

I've been through this but the story is too long to go through again (You're welcome, Eric).  One way to deal with it would be to talk to the service manager and get it in writing (not likely).  Another is to wait until the warranty has run out.  And yet another is to enjoy your inexpensive vehicle and not worry about it.

As for skid plates they are available thru the Chevy dealer but you =need a parts dept. who is willing to work at it.  I have an "03 Tracker and I purchased skid plates for the front drivetrain and transfer case separately and they weren't cheap.
The do offer a set but the transfer case skid plate didn't fit so I returned them.
According to Chevy what parts fit is determined by where the vehicle was being exported e.g USA or overseas etc
Let me know how you do I'll try to fing the receipts w/part #'s.
