Anybody ever have a cam lock up ???
« on: December 22, 2007, 02:55:18 PM »
I bought this samurai non-running. Put a head gasket on it, new timing belt, seals, etc. Started right up, set the timing to 10 degrees, drove it around the yard a few times, called it aday. Went out today and drove it on the road maybe 15 minutes, pulled into my driveway and it just quit. Checked everything I could think of, finally took the timing belt cover off and the belt was broke, thought it was a bad belt so went and got another one. When I went to turn the cam to set timing it wouldn't turn, I mean it wouldn't budge at all. I haven't taken the cam out but I took the head off and everything looks ok but still can't turn the cam. Anybody have any ideas???? why????

You put the head gasket on wrong and starved the cam of oil.

Well if its any consolation you're not the first to make that mistake. Theres a small oil hole (IIRC) at the rear of the head. If the gaskets on the wrong way round then its blocked.

I just went through the same thing. I inherited a Samurai that my uncle put the headgasket on backwards, I don't think the cam stopped but the journal was fairly galled up. Since there's no cam bearings to replace all I could do was sand out the material from the journal or replace a freshly rebuilt head, I opted for some sandpaper. It didn't take much to get the bore smooth so I tossed the cam back in and things have been fine since. I can see where this is a some what comon error becuase the oil line running to the head is tiny, it's actually at the front of the head, if you look at the waterpump housing you can see a small bore running up to the head.

I'm not familiar with the gaskets in question but if they are that easy to put in backwards, couldn't they have put a hole for the journal on either side of the gasket so  it wouldn't matter which direction it was installed? ???
