I have a 2" OME spring lift for my 4 door tracker. I want to go with 29-30" M/T tires (maybe 31" in future?). I know I need 5 on 5.5, but what other dimensions would you recommend for me on the wheels - 7, 8, or 10" width? Backspacing? I don't mind hammering & cutting, but I need to make sure I have enough backspacing to keep the tires off the frame right?

And, are the dimensions for the 29" tire 235/75/R15?

Forget the smaller tires and just go directly to 31's. If you go smaller you will have to drive another 30-50,000 miles before you get the tires you really want.

The width of the wheel needed depends on the width of tire you are going to put on it. You would probably be better off with a narrow 31 over a wide one both for clearance and stress on components.

235/75/15 = Overall Diameter: 28.87 in

go with 31x10.50's and use a 15x8" wheel with "std" backspacing (around 3.75") ...

you'll have to trim to fit with only a 2" lift, but it can be done.
If you add a 2" bodylift the trimming will be much less.

I called pep-boys, and they have a sale on their Dakota M/T 31" x 10.5" ($109 - same price as the 235/75/R15). Are you saying the 10.5" too wide for stock wheels (7" i think?). I really want to avoid body lifts - I would rather slap on spacers to my OME so I get frame clearance too... are 31" tires going to be too much for my little 1.6L 5 speed to push around? It's my understanding there's no gearing for these in 2/4 wheel high.

you might be able to stuff them on the stock wheels, but the stockers have a backspacing that will likely put a 10.50 into the frame.

I'd suggest just finding some used 15x8 CJ or ford 4x4 rims. I've never had a problem getting cheap 15x8 steelies for <$40 (set of 4). Even new, they are around $30 a piece.

BTW, I just realized you said a 4dr ... trimming is kinda limited.
You can hack away some of the rear tire arch, but it'll take some careful work.

I know you said you wanted to avoid a body lift, but a 2" BL on a 4dr IMO isn't a bad compromise ...

Also, do a gas tank lift ... I'll put up a link for when I did mine in a bit.

I have 31's on Jeep CJ 15x7" wheels with 3.75" backspacing, I only had to trim in the front. I have 2" of lift using coil spacers. I can't wheel it hard because the tires rub, not in the back, just the front. The rear does touch at full flex, but I avoid it for now. 2" will not be enough, I'm adding a 2" body lift when I get the time.



The 31's to me seem fine with the 5-speed 16 valve, I remember my old 92 automatic 8 valve was slugish with 30's.  There are times that I feel a drain, but it's no big deal.

i run 31x9.5 swamper radials on stock zr2 rims which are 6inches wide, no problems. i have about 2.25inches of lift up front and 3inches in back, plus an additional 2inch body lift.  i rub the frame on sharp turns.  the severity of the frame rub for you on stock rims will also depend on the type of tire you choose, the swampers have a beefy lug that hits hard, an all terrain won't likely be as bad.  the other guys are right about going to 31's right away, why buy tires twice?!  when i went from 30's that measured about 29.5 to the swampers and added the body lift the tracker was like a whole new truck offroad!

   Jeremiah,

   Keep in mind, that most on here will tell you that 2" of suspension lift is the maximum you can go without getting beyond the limits of the CV joints (angles). Beyond 2" and you will have to consider dropping the front end to keep driveline angles acceptable. This is why most lifts sold beyond 2" come with drop brackets for the front end.

Don't forget that the 5 speed ad a 5.125 gear ratio, and a 92 automatic ad a 4.625 gear ratio

I would try straight tires before putting on the wheel spacer.  I had a 1.5" spacer with 29" tires (1" spacer lift) and introduced a lot of rubbing.  I still rub a bit with the 1" spacers on the back of the wheel well but not near as bad.

baaaaa....ive got true 2" spacers on mine and 4 door coils in there too....roughly 3.5" of lift...ive had this setup since spring....wheeled the CRAP out of it and no cv issues.....just know how to drive a lifted 4x4 with ifs....NO SHARP TURNS with them locked in....there is no bind in my cages at full droop in the frontend either..but even with my 3.5" lift ive only got 235's on 8" wide wheels with 3" of backspacing, and i think without any cutting the biggest i could fit is like a 30x9.50 with the wider offset wheels it takes more "swing" of the tires to turn...this is where my issue isi got 31's ready to be mounted, but i wanna put a bodylift on her first so i dont have to do any "custom bodywork"
