I would like to add some 2" spacers. Is this a simple procedure?

I would like to add some 2" spacers. Is this a simple procedure?  Is there any welding or other modification involved?  I would like to add some 2" spacers.  Do you need special tools?  How long does it usually take?

For 2in spacers you will need 2in strut spacers and 1992 ford crown vic rear shocks.  If your handy with tools it will take about 4 hours.  If you don't know what your doing then i suggest getting someone who does just to make sure everything is installed correctly.  No welding is needed and an alignment is a must after the lift.  Happy Wheeling.

I just did mine yesterday (1.5" spacers) .  I am handy with tools and it took me six to seven hours.  Less than an hour for the rears and the rest was the fronts.  I didn't change the rear shocks in that time as I had put new originals on two days prior.  Would have had to add that to the time to be accurate.  Probably an hour of that was eaten by two trips to the store for parts.  I followed a tutorial on this site and I could be wrong but I didn't notice it mention you need coil spring compressor set.  There is NO way I would have been able to due this without it.  It was $35 at autozone and I had to cut the compressor bolts down so that they didn't dig into my A arms when compressing the springs.  My other trip was to get the replacement bolts for the front strut mounts.  There was a good tip on using a socket and vise to remove the bolts from the mount.  This worked great.  I didn't read that you had to have longer bolts to replace them hence the trip (probably skimmed over that).  I used 1 1/4" x 5/16 bolts and it worked fine.  Driver side I did have to pull the 3 bolts in the CV and remove the bolt on the sway bar to get enough clearance.  Passenger side I got smart and pulled the two bolts on the strut and removed from the A arm to give me space to work.  Didn't have to pull the cv on the pass side.  If I realized how much work it was going to take before doing it I probably would have skipped it.  After doing it and realizing that it really isn't that hard and it is a very noticable difference afterwards I am glad I did.  So my opinion is if you have someone to help hand you tools and do prep you could cut the time in half and should do it.  If you like tweaking performance on your toys do it.  If you are too lazy to spend that time on the floor getting greasy you should still do it but pay your redneck neighbor $50 and a case of beer to do it.

Tools I needed:
Impact wrench and socket set
metric wrench set
coil spring compressor set
pipe wrench to hold on top large washer on top of strut
hammer and punch to pop out bolts
large vise for removing studs from strut mount
floor jack and jack stands
Fresh can of WD-40
Torch to heat up rusted frozen bolts
work light
rubber hammer to beat spacers onto mount
grease to lube mount up so you don't have to beat so hard
mechanics hand cleaner (cause you will be dirty)

I am sure if I did it again I could fly through it in the 4 hours that many report.  Being the first time I was taking time to scratch my noggin to make sure the next step I was going to take wasn't going to affect something else.

You needed a coil spring compressor???  Seriously???  I have never heard of anyone needing one while lifting a trackick.  If you have the strut unbolted from the spindle, the ball joint unbolted from the spindle, the sway bar disconnected, and the cv pulled from the housing the coil should have easily slid into place.  Well at least you got it finished.  :)

THANKS! for all of the information.  I was worried about having to modify the shift linkage, etc like other lifts.  I will need to buy longer shocks for the back? You mentioned 1992 Crown victoria shocks.  By the way, this will be a daily driver with occasional light duty offroad.  I just want it lifted a little for the looks.

Well if you don't put the crown vic shocks (a little longer then stock) on it might result in a stiffer ride and your stock shocks might top out on your "occasional" off road adventures.  The crown vic shocks are only like $20 a piece at advance auto parts.  They're worth it.  And no shift linkage will need extended...thats only on a body lift, not suspension lift.

museboy07:

I didn't have the ball joint disconnected from the spindle so maybe that was the key step to not having the coil compressors.  I must have missed that step.   ::)  I probably would still do it without that step myself because the less pieces I have to remove on a old '92 vehicle the less I break and have to replace.

I did not use a spring compressor either. Installed 2" spacers, flipped strut mounts, mounted crown vic rear shocks, and slotted my struts for alignment... It only took about 2 1/2 to 3 hrs.

I didn't need coil spring compressor either, but I wish I would have used the right lug nuts for my 31's.  The rear tire flying 30 ft over head wasn't cool at all.
