tire rotation
« on: October 26, 2004, 12:49:10 AM »
Hi All,

I have heard several tire specialists opinion about rotating tires.

Does anyone know what the correct rotation pattern is for the Vitara 93 LWB.

Thanks
James.

I don't rotate tires
IMHO the tire guys want you to
rotate tires for even wear ......
Ya all your tires wear out at the same
time, now you get to buy 4 new tires
all at once, instead of just replaceing
the worn out front 2

If I'm rotating 4 they go from front to back on the same side.

I always do front to back & side to side, every couple of years, say 15k miles in my case

I rotate my 4 tires (not the spare) once a year in this pattern... http://www.carcarecouncil.org/Tires_Wheels/rotation.shtml

I guess you're stuck just front to back if you have unidirectional tires.

There are diagrams out there that show 5-tire rotation too.

I do a five way rotation probably 3-4 times a year on the Zuke, and a 4 way every 3K on the work car.  It does help.  The tires last a bit longer over all, and it helps issolate any weird wear patterns and what causes them.
Front to back on directionals is the only way to do it unless your willing to break down the tires every time you rotate. For the Unidirectionals  I do a combination of back to front, and side to side/ kitty corner things.
Just to let you know, with the work car I run through a set of tires about every 15K-20K with rotating, w/o about every 7 k.
I drive it a little rough.

I rotate front to back on the same side. If you want to do the spare I usually put it on the right front and the right front to rear and the rear to the spare. ;D

you rotate radial tires front to backe on the same side if u swap sides it can cause the steel belts in the tire to pull lose. if u run bias ply it dose not matter hoe u ratate them. if u have a lock rite it doesn't matter either because ur tires will be gone before u have a chance to rotate them.

I thought I had heard this was a myth/folklore (or maybe it's something that was true "in the early days"), but FWIW, there are several Web sites that refute this "fact".

Here's an excerpt from one (http://www.motortrend.com/features/care/112_9903_cc_tire/index1.html)...

Myth: Never rotate tires from side to side, only front to back.
Fact: Radial tires can be crossed from side to side in the rotation pattern. The old front-to-back rule applied to bias ply tires. Regular tire rotation--every 6000 to 8000 miles--promotes more uniform wear for all tires on a vehicle. (Goodyear recently designed a light-truck tire system that requires no rotation; the Wrangler RF-A provides a rear tire with a different tread design from the front tire).

i stand corrected. there must have been another reason my radial came apart.

When did that happen?  I think in the early days of radials that was not all that uncommon.
