Rear leaf is twisting
« on: October 21, 2004, 02:52:27 AM »

Notice the bottom shackle bolt sits all crooked. My leafs on that side in the rear are twiting. They are trying to spread out like one of those paper fans... Its causing my samurai to sag on that side in the rear. Any ideas on what happened? To much torque on stock springs? Over flexed them maybe? Im  ???

Possible aligment problems from front hanger to perch to rear hanger? Worn bushings?

That's the only thing I can think of. I think torque might do it do, but I think torque would affect spring "wrap" more. IE making an S shape out of your springs.

:)

Ain't you got any spring keepers on those? Get some!

long shackles add leverage to your spring hangers on your frame, instead of having side load and trying to slide your hangers off your frame you are trying to tear them off with leverage from a longer shackle and making your bushings do the dirty work that is why they look like they do, they are not made for that kind of loading. put a panhard bar on the front and rear or take the long shackles off. and you are changing your caster on the front end that effects your steering also (see like familycar.com or how things work) you also effect your cog. and your anti squat angle and prob yout turning radius toe in to name a few! sorry for the bad news.

Ya most of us learn the hard way, at least he knows where the weak link is and asked why, my brother would always work on his car and put in a new part and then call me and ask what was wrong with it and I would ask him what was the last thing that you did to it! I like trial and error but some times I can't afford it  ;D  I'm still messing with my samurai which is running great now but I have big plans for it in mods, prob 4k plus in parts laying on the floor for it, but it keeps me busy  8)

Long shackles tear up EVERYTHING.

Our 11 inch shackles warped our springs (sideways) and then allowed for amplified spring wrap.
The long shackles then destroyed the rubber bushings in less then a year.

We then had mismatched springs (weight capacity) because of the the way they warped, which resulted in a really nasty sideways bucking ride because of it.

(and this was only in the rear)
