MSD OFFROAD IGNITION with Blaster Coil
« on: March 30, 2008, 01:28:15 AM »
I notice that several members have installed MSD Ignitions or coils on their Zuks.  Are there any specific instructions for installing one in a 8V, Manual Transmission Tracker?  Looking at the MSD Series 6 instructions I assume that you'd use the "General Import Wiring" on Page 22, but where do you connect into the Tach?  I have the Hanes Manual, but it is only somewhat helpful.

i'm using an msd-2 coil, as a stock replacement, with an aftermarket tach. and had no issues.
there was some talk at the parts store about how it may affect the tach, but i didn't understand the concern. the tach is just a pulse counter(i think) and senses the pulse at the negative(-) terminal on the coil.
i have a chilton manual and it's only marginally helpful.
somebody on here must be using the msd-6 and have better info for you.

Most MSD boxes have a small terminal on the side for connecting the tach.

It is possible to run a tac off the negative side of the coil but you might need the tach adapter from MSD to work woith th Series 6 or 6a boxes. In some cases like in a VW water cooled the tach adapter might be needed for the fuel pump to work as well in FI situations.
I ran into this situaton when I had a MSD 6 in my VW Fox.
