Are 5.62's too low?
« on: April 03, 2008, 11:08:57 AM »
I have been lucky enough to find some 5.62's from a 97, so they should be direct bolt on replacements for the 4.62's on my rig.  Spec's of my rig are 2003, 2.0 4cyl, 5speed, rolling on 31 inch swampers.  gear ratio calculators state that i need to go to 5.30, which i know is not an available ratio.  5.38's are out there but i've never come across any and don't know if they come from the correct years to fit in my rig.  I've noticed lately that on road trips involving hilly terrain or strong winds that i just don't have enough power to run in a good rpm range to get decent fuel economy, my last 500km road trip consumed roughly 80 liters of fuel one way trying my best to keep between 100lm/h & 110km/h, on the return trip roughly 70 litres due to less winds ( i could actually hold speed without keeping th pedal on the floor).  Other than the obvious increased power, at this point with 31's might I be geared to low to see an increase in fuel consumption?

If you don't want to use the 5.62 I got a set of 5.38's that I'll trade you, if that's what you are looking for

The .3 difference relative to the 5.62 is neglegible. You may have 100rpm difference between the 5.38s and 5.62s.

5.38 would likely be ideal, if they'll go in, but it might not hurt anything to go with 5.62s.  You'll be able to use the lower gearing.  I went from 4.3s to 5.12s in my 5 speed V6 with 31s, and although I'm geared a little low, it gives me some extra oomf.  It will help you with going up hills, towing, etc. and as long as you don't drive 80+ mph (sorry...make that 125+ km/h) on the highway all the time it'll have minimal effect on your fuel economy.  RPMs will be a little higher than normal, but that's nothing to worry about with Suzuki powerplants.  Good luck.

Huh?  What do you mean 1997 5.62's?  We only saw them stateside in 1989 1.3L Sidekicks.

interesting, maybe somebody is giving me bad info because they want to sell the parts, some further investigation sounds to be required because i have no intention of making any other modifications to make these things fit.  at the price i'm gonna pay + shipping and pick up then the good old border crossing i need to be positive i'm getting the correct parts.  thanks.

it is possible that these were out of an 89 but had the sidegears changed to fit the 97, which then in theory will fit my 03.   ???

Maybe. Have them count the pinion and ring gear teeth and give it to you.  Do the math and check the ratio.
