If you do a search for "cool tailgate cover" on this forum (pg 5 I think), you will see the prep work I did before the painting.

I had a friend of mine paint the tracker last year and we did little prep work and it showed. It was camoflauge and had three different color paints on it. The paint started to peel and the Bushwacker was looking bad to say the least.  >:(

So,........I used an orbital sander and sanded the paint down to the original black and then some (had some original primer and metal showing). Before I ordered the Durabak paint, I primed some of the areas where the metal was showing. According to Durabak, I probably did not have to do this. This also presented a problem because you have to clean the preped area very good before painting. Durabak suggests to clean with a strong detergent (I used trisodium phosphate and water) and then use Xylene (bad crap :-*) to clean before painting. When I used the xylene, it started taking the Krylon automotive primer off that I had sprayed on it. I took most of the primer off with the xylene and then wiped it down with more xylene before painting.

To make a long story short, according to Durabak all you have to do is rough the paint with 100 to 150 grit sand paper, use strong detergent, let dry, wipe with xylene, let dry, and then paint. Of course I went overboard. I removed all of the parts like door handles, lights, rubber around the doors, AND ALL OF THE PAINT :(!

You guys interested in this project do a search on the Durabak website. They have some really cool jeeps and other vehicles that have been completely coated with this stuff.

I'll do it again on my next project! As far as cost,......2 gallons |removethispart|@ $120 a gallon for the paint. The paint comes with a 9" roller per gallon. I cut one of the rollers in half so that I could get into tighter places with it. Bought the pan that you put paint into for the roller, Xylene (bad crap), 9" and 4 " roller handle, chemical gloves, blue painters tape, 2" paintbrush, and sand paper.  $300 bucks give or take to do the rig. I spent 3 days just sanding (remember, I went overboard) and a day to paint.  Not bad for a paint job!;)
