Axle Perch Width Question (YJ Spring Content)
« on: April 09, 2008, 08:36:00 PM »
I'd like to swap toyota axles under a samurai with stock springs (2 inch wide) with the possibility of going to YJ springs (2.5 inch wide) later.

My question is:
Is there any problem with running the 2.5" springs on the 2" perches?

Also, I heard that the samurai axles and the toyota axles have the same diameter so they could use the same perches... that right?

Thanks

The toy axle is larger than the sammi, if you want to place YJ spring and toy axle here's a link to show you the part that you need to do the swap

I talked to some guys at sky, they saying it was pretty common to have a quarter inch hanging over on each side of the perch.  So you should be alright running a sami spring perch with a YJ spring.

You could probably get a sami perch to fit on a Toyota axle, but if you try and buy a Toyota spring perch from marlin, sky, or trail gear there going to be made to fit a 3" axle tube.

Swapping a toy front under a sami means you have to move your springs perches in, MaD.72 posted the place to go for getting the conversion kit.
I have it on my toy front, it was a pretty legit kit.

Hope some of the info

Thanks very much that answered my question.  I'll make sure and get the correct perches for the toyota axle diameter, and I'll get them 2" wide so I can use the stock springs and not worry about the future YJ springs hanging over slightly later.  That sky kit for the front looks pretty cool.

BTW, what is the outside diameter of the suzuki axle housing?  I found a page that said the early (solid front axle) toyota housings were 65mm OD, and the later (independent front) rear ends were 80mm OD.  But I'm having trouble finding the dimensions of the samurai housings.
65mm comes out as slightly more that 2 1/2"...  I'll make sure I get perches that fit correctly.

Also, the toyota front ends are 56" wide, and the rears are 55".  How wide are the suzuki axles?  Are the toyota axles going to stick out further on each side?

Sorry for all the newbie questions that you've probably answered hundreds of times, I'm still learning.  These samurais look like they'd make incredibly capable rigs.

Thanks again!
Chris

I was runnin 33x12.5 on 15x10 offset rim, and whit the toy axle the tire was sticking out at about 8" on each side

Front axles have a 3in dia, i think the 79-85 rears are a little bit bigger than 2.5" and the 86+ rear axles have a 3in dia also.

The IFS rear axles (86+) are 3 inches wider than the 79-85 rears.
Just thought i would throw that little tid bit out there.

MaD.72 i have not yet put them on but im going try and get them under in a week or two.
I just have to finish working on my girl friends Bronco2.

I have so many parts right now....My room looks like a warehouse!
im going to throw some new pics up on my build soon.

I just read somewhere that the toyota axles are 5" wider than the suzuki axles.  Does this sound about right?

Yes this is true, 5 to 6 inches wider than a sami.
You can gain another 3inchs of width by doing an IFS hubb swap, that is if your into getting as wide as possible.
