Front end death wobble at 35-46mph
« on: June 23, 2008, 02:00:10 PM »
i just bought a 88 sammy with ome dakar lift springs and 1" lift shackles up front with new bushings.  At about 35-46mph there is a horriable steering wheel shake and when i looked out the window the front tires move left to right 3+ inches at that speed and any faster the truck sways side to side.  i checked the steering stabalizer and its in good condition. there is no sway bar.  i have swapped entire front ends including steering but its just as bad. when jacked up the tires have a little side to side play.  any help wold be great it is undrivable but got a good deal on it.

Death wobble.

Caused by worn wheel bearings, worn kingpin bearings, worn tierod and/or draglink joints, worn birfield ball seals (they help dampen things),out-of-balance tires, over alterd caster caused by lift shackles and shackle lifts themselves!

I would start with a thorough inspection of the entire steering linkage for loosness.  Then I would remove the locking hubs and take a look at the condition of the outer wheel bearings.  If there is play there, it might be a good idea to replace both the inner and outer bearings and races.

Check the felts on the backside of the hub. They rub against the bifrield ball joint.  They should be wiping the ball clean and the ball should be fairly polished and lubricated.  Too much grease there indicates that the rubber seals are damaged and need replacing.

Shake the tire vertically to check for kingpin bearing wear.  If there is any play, those bearings should be replaced.

I have talked a lot about buying and installing worn parts here...  Do not get nervous!

Most of the parts mentioned here are less than $50 each.  You can also get a complete rebuild kit from vendors like Roadless Gear (http://www.roadlessgear.com/page/RGL/CTGY/DA) for $150.00 (both sides!)

And... you can obtain a copy of the Samurai Factory Service Manual (FSM) from many Zukin' websites.  Of course everyone here will tell you that my favorite website for the FSM (and lots of other links to useful stuff) is Ack's FAQ.  The link to it is in my signature....  Just do a search for fsm.

The missing swaybar has no effect on steering stability - only on body sway in cornering.  Some (myself included) might even disagree with that statement - the swaybar HAS no function! Most Zukers take the sway bar off and throw it away.

I hope that this helps!
