« on: July 18, 2008, 05:35:47 AM »
Hiya guys, bin a while since ive been on here.. but i'm a bit confused.. kind of...

Will an SJ413 rear diff fit into a vitara rear axle... in any way... i'm pretty sure i've already done it before.. but i'm doubting myself...

The reason being, i am putting a vitara rear axle onto my sj (will try and post pics later) and would like to keep the sj gearing...

Any help appreciated

I know people make hybrid Tracker rear ends. Is that what you're talking about doing with the Vitara?

No, the 413 diff will not bolt in to a Vitara rear housing.

Have you got a Vit front diff or R&Ps nstalled in the 413 axle? If thats the case then you won't have any problems as long as you match the Vit axle to the front (ie auto or manual ratios)

Nope.  Why are you putting the Vitara rear axle in though?

The reason i'm putting a vitara back axle...

I want to bob tail my LWB sj413 and wouldn't be able to shorten it too much if it was still on leaf springs. I have a spare vitara and measured the chassis dimensions and where all the coil springs mounts sit on the chassis etc.. and it would fit onto my SJ with very little modification (a fair bit of welding of course).

If i use the vitara back axle, then it saves grinding off all the mounts on the axle and then rewelding them onto another axle.

I'm gonna take the Vit axle off this morning to line it up and see how it all lines up.

Has anyone ever done this? Its the LWB SJ utility type pick up.

Rhinoman, could you explain a bit more? Is there somewhere I could buy new R&Ps to make the ratios match?

Cheers for the help!

What gearing and tyre sizes are you running? You could fit the Vit axle with its stock R&P and then put the Vit front diff into the SJ front axle. The gearing will be a fair bit lower then the stock SJ gearing though.

i'm looking to run either 33s or 35s depending on the final amount of lift i have, it currently has a 410 transferbox (will be looking to change to a rocklobster type) 1300cc samurai gearbox and 1600 8v motor.

will the front diff just swap straight in? or is there any adjustments needed to it?

Cheers again

If the Tracker is 95 or older the front diff will swap straight into a Sammy front end as it has 22 spline.  If it is 96 or later, the front diff will swap into the rear of a Sammy as you have the 26 spline.  Unless you are running heavy duty front axles, in which case you need a 26 spline diff for the front end.

Depending on the year of SJ-413 you may have a smaller flange where you drive shaft bolts up to the third member.  You can re-drill the flange so it works though.

As for the Tracker rear end, the diff is centered instead of off set, so your drive shaft will be at an angle.  This may cause binding and vibrations.

You can fit the complete Vit diff into the front but most people rebuild the SJ diff with the Vit R&Ps. The SJ diff carrier is steel and stronger than the Vit item. I would look at swapping in a Samurai front axle. The extra width will give more stability and you would then have the option of running upgraded shafts. I don't think that they are readily available for the 413.

So is it just the ring and pinion i would want from the vitara front diff?

Will the gearing be affected very much?

Cheers again,  very helpful info!

The SJ diffs are 3.91 and the (manual) Vit diffs are 5.12s. So the Vit diffs are around 25% lower. Stock tyres are around 27" so going up to a 33 will raise the gearing by about 20%. So with 33s and Vit diffs you end up around 5% lower geared than stock. If you fit the Rocklobster then you will be lower still - I would consider that combination too low for a daily driver but with your speed limits maybe not. Don't forget that it will pull much stronger anyway because of the extra torque of the 1.6 engine.
