Question: High Idle
« on: September 19, 2008, 04:05:40 PM »
Ok so I have seen this issue on different forums but nothing that has really answered the question. I have an 88 Suzuki Samurai that  idles high but when I push the choke back into the carb i can get it to slow down. I mean the thing sounds like it is about to explode. I had the car worked on and the shop got it to idle normal again but it was a little rough. Before it would idle high and then slow when I put it in gear and then stop after it warmed up. I went to emissons and they said it was kicking out to much fuel out the exhaust. I need it to pass. The shop told me it was something internal in the carb that was messed up and recommend that I just use the other carb I had. So I did. Kind of a pain in the ass. But now it still has the same issue as it use too. I have check the vaccum lines and they all seem good. I heard something about an idle up actuator. But i dont know were that is. Anyone have any ideas please.

I'm guessing its the factory carb. theres alittle trick with them. theres 2 adjustments cold idle and hot idle. hot idle is easy its just a Phillips head screw adjustment cold idle is the tricky one. if u go to www.suzukiinfo.com you can download the factory service manual and it will show you how and there is another also another download specially for the carb adjustment. for tools i used a metal cloths hanger and a big flat head screw driver and also make sure the car is cold before you do adjustments you'll understand what I'm talking about after you read how to do it  good luck

I had a severe high idle problem that drove me crazy for a while.  I tired many things before I found that my accelerator cable had frayed and was dragging.  New cable - problem solved.  The idle should NEVER have to be changed if everything else is correct.  Are you SURE that your vacuum lines are not leaking and are routed correctly?  How about the one that go from under the air-cleaner to the engine? That one has a habit of coming off the engine.

the one under the air cleaner to the engine shouldn't cause the high idle. thats just emissions and environmental bull. i run a filter right on top of the carb and that hose i have ran to a catch can that i drain to my waste oil heater

Check the throttle cable where it goes thru the firewall. That is where the cable gets cut up and freyed. Even if that is not your problem, you should be aware of this potential problem. It can stick wide open at the worst time...
