What Power Steering should I add?
« on: September 16, 2008, 05:20:38 AM »
Want to add power steering to 88 SAM.  Which steering boxes fit and may be available from salvage?  I see rocky Road talks about Toyota - but the steering box is 1981 vintage and getting more difficult to find.  Do I use a Suzuki and what years will fit?  Any web links I can go to for details?

Thanks - Carl

The easiest to do is probably the Tracker power steering conversion.  Acks Faq (http://www.acksfaq.com) has a couple articles on different power steering conversions.  I recommend checking it out and doing a search for Power Steering.

If you plan on going with big ol tires and rock crawling i would suggest using a 86+ Toyota IFS steering box.  Takes a big of fab work to get in, but defiantly worth the tire turning power.

If none of the above is what you plan on doing....Drone couldn't of said it any better!

Can use Toy 2WD, or Nissan too... but it'll take more fab work on your end, as there's no kits available.

The tracker/sidekick is an easy and well supported conversion, but it is the weakest power steering on the planet.
