oil leak on 1.6L
« on: September 19, 2004, 11:16:31 AM »
i have a 1.6 carby. it developed a oil leak a couple of days ago. i haven't had much time to clean it up and check it properly.

but from where i can see, it from the rear bottom of the engine block, maybe a sump seal, or it might be leaking oil from the bell housing? (where clutch is right?)

someone led me to believe that if there is any oil in the bell housing, i'm in a lot of trouble..... can this be confirmed?

this is my DD, so i'm trying to find out whats wrong with it before i start ripping is all apart.

thanks for any help or info you can give.

Take a look at the O-ring
that seals the distributor,
it's a common leak spot.

There are two O-rings, one that
seals the distributor shaft in the
housing, and a big skinny one that
seals the housing to the cylinder head.

Oil fills up in the camshaft area and spills
over this resivour onto the valves and the
distributor drive housing.

I would look at this as the source of
the oil before you dig too deep into
the other seals.

Good Luck

I bet it is behind the distributor as well.  This just happened on mine. Follow the oil up to its highest point and you should hit the bottom of it.  Two little bolts and some new o-rings later and you are good to go.

3 bolts, plus the dizzy hold down,
and you should be in good shape

the leak behind the head for the dizzy is fixed, i did that a couple of months ago.

the leak doesn't go higher than half way up the rear of the block, i have a strong feeling that it could be the main bearing, or seal. hope its not.

if it is, how can i fix it, will i have to drop the gear box? and the clutch as well???

its so frustrating, cos everything that goes wrong all happens at once!

i went and got new CV boots today, 3 of the 4 have just 'shredded themselves, no idea why, and the CV/drive shaft agngles aren't that extreme yet, maybe cos the boots were old. so i have to replce those, i dont think it'll be hard.

i'm just worried about the other oil leak.

oh well, might have to ask a mechanic to have a look and tell whats going on, then i'll have to have a crack at doing it myself if i can.

boo hoo....

thanks for the help guys. Steve
