Gear ?
« on: September 19, 2004, 12:16:19 PM »
Ok,
So my sammy is a daily driver and i still want to be able to go at least 65 mph on the freeway and im going to 33's soon so Im taking out the lockrights to be replaced with ARBs front and rear and now all i have left to do is buy the ring a pinion and the rebuild kit for each diff. so my questions is, would 5.12 be too low? Thanks.
You can take the Sammy off the trail, but you cant take the trail out of the Sammy.

1.3 or 1.6? If it is a 1.3, your hamster will be running pretty fast on that wheel ;D

It's a 1.3

You think it would be OK to leave the stock 3.83's in there?  It seems to me like that would be spinning a little fast in the diff to keep them 33's rollin. I was thinking 4.12's should do the trick either that or 4.56's.

Man, I hate to think about this stuff again, but can someone tell me what this gear calculation really means?

The calculator states "they [bigger tires] may also be robbing you of power/gas mileage. This calculator will get you back to a ratio that's closer to your original. "

So, I plug suzi_n_sammy's numbers in (I'm assuming around 28" tires currently) 33" new tires and 3.83 gears and get 4.51 as the "new" gear.  What is that supposed to mean?  It implies to me that the effect of larger tires is to lower the gear ratio, so the existing 3.83s might actually be equal to 3.25s.  That would explain less low end power, but implies a higher top end and improved mileage.  I can believe that putting 4.51s in will improve off the line power, but it certainly shouldn't help gas mileage and will most likely lower both MPG and top end speed.

What's the deal?

I think the stock tires are 26's but ill have to double check caus im not at home. the gearing is you start with 26's and go to 33's it just shows you what gearing you'd need to take it to the stock range. like suzuki did work to find out that the best ratio of gear would be 3.83 for the 26's. so to get that stock range again youd need 4.8. . . blah blah blah. So you can also use that with T-case gears or whatever.

I'd say 4.62's on 33's is the closest to setting your speedo back to stock. should work okay with your lil 1.3 but may be less strain with the 5.13's

with 5.13's, your 1.3 will be revving at over 4000 rpm(depending on the tranny year you have)just to stay at 65 but to those lil motors that's nothing

with the 1.6 you'd be better off stickin with the 4.62's, I wouldn't feel safe revving the 1.6 over 4000rpm with the 5.13's for too loong a trip just to stay the speed limit

Without the 6.5:1 tcase, get 4.62s.

With the 6.5:1 tcase, use the stock 3.73's. Your gear ratio will be 2% higher than stock. Your speedometer will read a bit over 51 when you are going 50.

If you have the pre 88.5 transmission, 3.90s could make 5th more useable.

With a stock sammy case, 5.12s are the perfect gear for 33s. I ran that way for several years. With a 1.6, you can even use tose gears with 35s(did that in my lwb with no problem).
Hope that helps.
