ITS BACK! ... with pics this time...
« on: September 16, 2004, 05:43:22 PM »
o.k. guys, so I travel 1000 km and what do I get, a nasty oil leak and running the engine with no oil (for how long, I'm not sure, but I caught it in time I think)

here's some quick snaps I took of the under side, bear with me, it's 11:30 at night here! I'm sure you'll know what you're seeing. My question here is, what the heck do I do to fix this prob? Cheapest *easier* way preferred! Click the pic to get the thumb larger.

The drain plug on the rear of the transfer baox should have a sealant on the threads.

Do you think this is where I'm losing all the oil from?

The oil on the transfer case blew back.  I would say you have a leak up front somewhere.  It doesn't take much oil to make the underneath look like that!

I had someone a while back here in town say that both my FRONT and REAR engine seals needed to be replaced. Does this mean the transfer case seal and the rear main seal? He told me that the transmission would have to be pulled... What are your thoughts guys? I'll take it to a mechanic here, as I'm not skilled enough to pull out the transmission :-[ myself. Is this a costly thing?? I want to get rid of this leak once and for all!!

It's not the oil filter (this time anyway) as far as I know because when its the oil filter, my exhaust gets covered first and stinks when the car warms up and cools down. Its just really soaked from the place where my belts are to the end of the undercarriage.

Tat sounds like the front needs to be replaced. It's alot easier/cheaper than the rear. I had mine done not to long ago but I do not remember what I paid to have it done :-/ The rear seal requires that the trans/t-case be pulled so it will cost you more in labor. I would do the front, clean it up good and see if it fixes the problem.

THat is a front oil seal leak. I had one in my "97 a while back. I fixed it my self quick cheap and easy. I had to buy the whole gasket set for the engin though because AutoZone did not want to take out the less than $1.00 seal I needed.

Thanks guys for all the info! I will see what I can do with the front myself... I have a few days off coming up and I'll order the gaskets (front and rear) and if that doesn't clean it up, I'll take it in to do the rear seal as well. Many thanks,

I ran into that with one of the seals, but I called Hawk and they sent me exactly what I needed, without buying the whole package 8)
