Wheel bearing installation time ?
« on: February 11, 2009, 04:43:24 AM »
I noticed when I had my 94' track up on jackstands I had some movement when i grabbed the wheel at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position . Correct me if i am wrong but I think the outer wheel bearings are bad or not snugged up . How long is the average time to replace the outer wheel bearings ? I haven't ever done them on a tracker before.
Thanks,
Raz

If they aren't making noise (like grinding/scraping/growling noises), and the wheel will spin relatively smooth, without being "notchy" or "grabby", then they are likely just loose and need to be taken apart, cleaned, repacked and reinstalled.  If you are not familiar with repacking bearings, do an internet search for how to do it.  You don't just goop some grease on the outside of them and call it good....you have to either use a bearing packing tool, or your hand, and work the grease into the inside of the bearings.
You should do both the inner and outer wheel bearings.
Figure an all day job, since you haven't done them before.
There are 2 seals that go on the backside of the wheel hub (you can't see them until you pull the wheel hub off).  I think most places call them inner and outer wheel hub seals (it refers to where they are on the backside of the hub).   One seal will have to be removed in order to remove the inner wheel bearing (there is also a snap ring under the seal that has to come off, that actually holds the bearing in).  The Federal Mogul part numbers for the seals are 710240 and 710239.

So, you just take the outer keeper off that is held on by two screws and then spin the "nut" off ? Then remove the bearing ?
Thanks,
Raz

No.  The whole wheel hub has to come off to access the inner bearing (the are 2 wheel bearings...an inner and outer).  Take the manual locking hub off....take the screws out (there are usually 4) that hold the keeper on....take the lock "nut" off (requires a special socket...unless you want to use a hammer and punch to remove....but going to be kinda hard to torque it to specs with a hammer and punch on reinstallation)...pull the complete wheel hub off...the outer bearing will fall out, but to remove the inner bearing, the inner wheel seal on the backside of the wheel hub has to be removed.  And like I said before, you might as well replace the outer seal on the backside of the hub too, while you are in there.

Oh, and it probably is the wheel bearings that are loose.  But you might want to make sure it is not in the ball joints.
