5'' Calmini lift
« on: February 19, 2009, 12:53:23 PM »
I bought my 86 Samurai with the 5'' Calmini lift on it. It is really stiff. Is there any way to soften it up?

Is it the Spring Under lift or the Spring Over?

Can anyone recommend a shock that would help?

I have a 88 Sammy with stock springs, 6 " SPOA, 2" longer shackles and it is stiff.  I just put on extended shock mounts from RRO and I bought their extended shocks which are softer and the ride is better.  Remember the Sammy is light.  Putting on heavy truck shocks will make it REALLY stiff.  Next thing to do to make it ride better is either CJ/RUF (tons of stuff on the forums about this)  or to go the YJ conversion (also lots of stuff about this on the forums)

Good Luck!

Add weight to the front (bumper, winch...), or start wheeling the crap out of it. The springs will soften up. Samurai's will never have a "soft" ride... so... what you're experiencing could be normal.

Like Eric said, you need softer shocks.  The Calmini Spring Under lift will never be a soft ride like YJ springs though.  But it does mean you can rally around a bit faster.  :D

You might be able to get the numbers off of the current shock then find one with a lighter rating.  Not really sure as I run a SPOA and F-250 light duty shocks on my SJ.

Samuai is a "hard one" car itself, by design. I got Calmini 3.5", and it seemed to me much softer then was in stock. "Hard" means better cornering and safety on-road for such a little truck.

Just don't understand why are poeple on all Zuki's forums from time to time asking questions about Sammi's stiffness.
