'87 sam gas gage issue
« on: March 19, 2009, 09:53:13 AM »
Getting down to the "Little Stuff" on my little girls TIN TOP and one of them is the fuel gage. The previous owner of 5 years told me the gage quit no him about 2 years before. Do I automatically assume that the gage or sending unit is bad and replace one or both, or is there something else I need to check before I "Jump" into this? Any and all input is welcome.......

If you can get access to the wires on the sending unit you can check them for resistance.   Or you can hit them with 12v and see if the gauge moves.  Either test should show you which of the two is bad.

Usually it is the sending unit.

dont know if you have already tried but check the grounds for the sending unit... alot of problems with them is just a simple corroded or loose ground...

If your temp gauge is not working your problem will be the instrument cluster. I learned the hard way by changing the gas sending unit and temp switch first. On my Sami when i connected to the sending unit wire with a hot wire the gauge worked. That's why i changed the sending unit in the tank, but the gauge still did not work until I put a good cluster in.

Also, you can do a search for sender at Ack's FAQ (link in signature.. ::)  ) to find a post on how to fix your sending unit...  assuming the above testing suggestons indicate that the sending unit is whacked.

I'd bet on a bad ground...

Well the wife had us go down to Atlanta For KING TUT and THE FIRST EMPEROR W/CHINA'S TERRACOTTA ARMY. Well it was quite cool and I kinda liked it all . I guess it was O.K. to put it off till NEXT weekend. I work 2 (two) jobs and don't complain except I don't have enough time for MY projects.
