AC stopped working 96 SideKick.
« on: June 16, 2009, 09:16:21 AM »
Check of AC system, all looks fine. Full of 134a. all wires are connected & yes AC belt is on. If I run power to compersser it blows cold. 1st I noticed it not blowing cold & AC comp. not working. AC button light up when pressed. Then two days latter when I started up the veh. the AC cond. fan stays on & won't turn off. (AC button off!) If anyone has had the same cond. & got it fixed could you please point me to the cause. Thanx in advance.

Check Ack's FAQ - there should be an a/c troubleshooting guide.

Off the top of my head - I think there is a temp sensor that causes that - it thinks the engine is overheating and disables the a/c and runs the condenser fan in an attempt to move more air through the radiator.

The AC condenser fan should only run when the AC is on (it will sometimes turn, just from the engine fan pulling air through the radiator....making it appear like it is running).  It is not used as a auxillary engine cooling fan....at least not on any trackicks I have seen.
There is a pressure switch in the AC system.  If the pressure is too low (low freon level) then it will not activate the compressor.  It usually doesn't take much freon to bring the pressure up enough to kick the compressor on.  That would be my guess on what your problem is.

I had the exact same problem on my 98 kick.  AC would blow cold when I jumped the compressor to kick on.  The condesor fan would run all the time even without the compressor on.   It ended up being the temperature sensor on the side of the thermostat housing.  There are 2 temp sensors on the housing, one goes to the temp gauge on the dash and the other goes to the ac amplifier.  The one located on the passenger side is the one you need to check.  Pull off the wire and touch it to ground and see if your compressor kicks on.  Good Luck.

OK - AG_xterra is the man - take a look here http://www.zukiworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=24994.0 - there is a link in his post to the troubleshooting guide that I mistakenly thought was at Ack's FAQ.

You'll need to get one of the "track-kick" guys to do that - I drive a '98 GV  ;)

AG_xterra got it ! The temp. sensor on the t-stat was the problem & now all is "Cool"! The wire was broken at the sensor. Sensor can be seen in lower left bottom corner of my motor pic. right below t-stat housing.
