Carb / Idle / won't run problem
« on: June 12, 2009, 05:28:04 AM »
OK my wise and swarthy Sami guru's....I need some help...kind of long so bear with me....

Long story short, my '88 Sami is sick......Yesterday I was driving down the road and she started sputtering, coughing and finally died on the side of the road. Wrecker trip to the mechanic and here's what he did / said.....

He worked on the carb....Sami would idle (somewhat ) but he said that it was "running lean". When he sprayed carb cleaner in the carb. it would of course idle up but when that burned off it would bog back down. I'll mention here that I do not have a catalytic converter ( straigh through with a cherry bomb). Anyway, back to the problem....mechanic blocked off 2 vacum lines and put some "heavy duty" jet / carb cleaner in the tank. He advised before replacing carb to run this through and see if it cleaned the carb up enough to smooth out. Well...it didn't. Fuel level was fine in the bowl ( sigh glass) so I don't think it is a fuel delivery problem or a filter issue ( but I'm changing it out anyway ).

I've perused most all of the posts on here and have come to the conclusion that short of a carb re-build,( which I really don't want to do ), a new carb may be in order. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Also, since I am "cat-less" what things can I do ( i.e. remove / do without ) since I am not bound by emissions controls where I live?

I have ordered a rebuilt carb from Trail Tough........

If any other particulars are needed I'll be glad to tell.........

I had a similar problem where the carb was cutting out on my SJ-410.  The carb was horribly horribly plugged up to the point it ended up burning out my fuel pump.  After some research we found out that the previous owner had decided against a fuel filter.  A different carb and an electric pump and she runs better then ever.

Make sure that carb is actually getting fuel all the time.  Drone637 had a cracked plastic fuel line coming out of the Fuel tank that usually allowed the fuel pump to draw fuel from the tank.  But it kept "vapor locking".  After a lot of searching he found the bad spot (connection between fuel tank and line) and replaced it.  After 30 years of vibrations it had developed a small crack.  Probably where the dirt came from that plugged his carb.   (Importance of fuel filters.)
He had installed an electric fuel pump to replace the mechanical one, and it kept running (would not pressure up and stop), which got him searching for the vacuum leak.  Would not have known it was there with the mechanical pump because it is not a good idea to open the fuel system with the motor running.

I'm in the process of running all my lines right now.......noticed some age on the fuel lines coming out of the tank / after the fuel filter when I changed it ( fuel filter ), so.........new lines all around....so many things...so little time.....

Hey reezen09. (and everyone else ).......just got the My-Side installed and have to say, Myron is as good as his product. Took me about 2-3 hours to get it all installed......went right by the directions with no problems. Called My a couple of times ( fule line issues, vac lines, idle screw, etc. ) and can't start to tell you how pleasurable it is to do business with someome who stands behind their product. First turn of the key and she fired right up......tweaked the idle a little.....traced down another vac line that I missed and over all.......I couldn't be happier at the moment. Gonna' take her out this weekend and se what she'll do......just up and down the road can already tell a BIG difference in responsiveness, acceleration and over all performance......no hesitation..........let you know how it goes after this weekend.......:)
