who knows about propane?
« on: July 02, 2009, 03:40:50 PM »
whos running the propane set-up on a 1.3? Seems to be a decent item to obtain. My question would be the compression ratio of the pistons and which ratio works best (stock, 9.5 or 10.2:1). From what ive heard the smaller engines need a 10-11 comp ratio, any truth to this??????? ???
Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, all right. We got 4:11 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some freakin' muscle.

Propane can be run at a higher compression than pump gas. It's frequently compared to 108 octane... so, whatever compression ratio 108's good for. Just like you can run 91 octane in something that's not "taking advantage" of it, you can run propane on lower compression. People use it on stock Suzuki engines all the time - especially on full-time trail rigs.

I think propane is WAY under-utilized in turbo installs. The IMPCO mixers were literally engineered to work with turbo setups. They're designed for industrial use, where turbos are common power-adders. I've got a 20 gallon propane tank, a 1.6 16V, turbo manifold, and IHI RHB5 itching to go into something...

COOL, Im gonna build (2) 1 w/ 9.5 and the other w/ the 10.2 pistons. Should be about 2 weeks. Im really looking forward to this, should be fun. 8). Ill let ya'll know what i come up w/

I'd bet $$$ you could still (mildly) turbo the 9.5 and be safe... since 9.5 can generally be run on pump gas. In any case - at lest you can get aggressive with the timing on both.

OH OH, LOOK SLIKE I BROKE ETIQUITE AGAIN. ???.

This was a very good reply from a I.M. from jeremiah. (i guess were not supposed to do that)..lol

Would have preffered if this question was asked in the public forum, so everyone can benefit from the answer, but here you go...

IMPCO is the popular brand to go with. http://www.gotpropane.com/p4.html is probably the most popular Suzuki supplier. The biggest problem I know of is locating the tank in the vehicle somewhere, and that propane isn't as "available" as other fuels. It's also an "odd" fuel, so if you run out, it's not very likely someone can spare some fuel for you (pretty much every group has at least one guy with a jerry can & gas).

Other than that, it's a VERY simple setup. Not much to go wrong. About as reliable as Diesel. Work at ANY angle, and plays nice with forced injection either via blow through (there's a port for intake reference), or draw through. As long as your mixer is big enough to handle the volume of air - it'll automagically adjust the A/F ratio to optimum.

The fuel burns SUPER clean. You only need to change your oil every year or two. Hardly ANY carbon gets burned, so no carbon buildup issues on valves / plugs etc.

L/P is quite popular in the UK - especially in Australia. It's emissions are stupid-low. Not sure why it's never really gained much ground here (other than on fork lifts). The fuel isn't as "powerful" as gas, so like e85 you'll burn more of it to get equal HP / Torque numbers. But, also like e85, you can run much higher compression / boost / aggressive spark management to make up for it (takes a lot to get it to pre-detonate).

Thanks for throwing the post in here  ;D

It's not that you broke etiquette, or did something wrong. PM's are great if the information isn't really going to benefit anyone but the two people eMailing one another. But, with a topic like this one, it's good to have the information where people are following the thread, or people can find is searches down the road.

If you go LP, and do your tests, let me know how they turn out. I've got the kit to install, but California's stupid smog-nazzi rules make it difficult to install on anything but my '57 chevy. I've already got a 20 gal tank, so range won't be much of an issue for me  ::)
