Just finishing up my nissan sd22 diesel and 5 speed swap into an 87 tintop samurai.  yj spring conversion and 31 inch bfg gives a nice ride height.  Finally fired it up last week and now to finish up a few odds and ends like wiring and interior.  Wasn't as bad as I thought.  Wanted to do something different than the typical vw swap. worked out relatively cheep as I got a complete running pickup for $400 Cdn.  Used alll the parts from the truck that I could and junked the rest.  Had to move the t-case back about 6 inches and have new driveshafts made up. Scoured the local pickand pull for a rad and electric fan to fit.  And fabbed up alot of my own brackets.  Should have it on the road shortly now.  Will let you know how it goes.  If it works like I want it to, I would recommend this swap as an alternative to some of the other diesel optionsl  Norm

My cousin has a little Nissan with a diesel sitting in it that he keeps bugging me to swap into the SJ.  Let us know how it works for you.

Are you running stock gearing with the 31's?

At this point I will be running stock gearing and 31 inch tires.  Emailed another guy who had done the same swap with lower transfer case gears and he found the diesel reved a bit high with those ratios.  If I have to I have a couple sets of 4:62's I clould swap in.  Will keep you posted.  Norm

did you swap in the nissan tranny? is the engine very heavy? I've got a  complete Datsun diesle truck but I found the motor/tranny combo very heavy.

You should be ok with the stock gearing. It should crawl over almost anything on idle.

I actually picked up a tranny from a 83-86 datsun 4x4 and swapped the tailshaft and guts onto the diesel bellhousing making it about 6 inches shorter.  (Had a local datsun guru do the tranny work for me) Then had to move the t-case back about 6 inches and make a new intermediate shaft with a nissan front and suzuki back flange to bolt up to the t-case.  Because the t-case was moved back, I had to shorten the rear drive shaft and have a longer front shaft made.  Weight doesn't seem to be an issue as I have yj springs swapped in all 4 corners and sits ok.  Lots of info on the nissan diesel on nissan diesel index.  (forums etc.) Currently working on wiring.  Will keep you posted.
