14" electric fan conversion with pictures
« on: October 01, 2009, 08:41:41 PM »
So doing my diesel swap I found a 14" electric puller fan on ebay. It fits right in the existing fan shroud.
I have not wired in the temp sensor stuff yet but here's a good look at what could be done for those who are interested.
If you are a deep river guy or drive in deep snow this seems to be the main "Cons" of the deal, the pros being maybe 1/2mpg, quiter at high speeds, better in slow traffic able to cool better.
procomp S-Fan Blade Part# PC-2053 S About $35
Fan relay kit, I opted for the adjustable kit about $45
Cheaper 190 degree kits about $20

I think I'm missing something here - what are the cons of an electric fan in deep river or snow?

Also what vehicle is that Procomp going into - I'd love to be able to fit an electric as neatly as that in my GV

As i post my post on death to the clutch fan low and behold!..... BUT. How much does that fan draw? is it a 400+ CFM fan? Are you running the AC fan in front for push pull? This just might be what im looking for to get rid of that damn clutch fan.....

On BRD HNTR's Tracker we only run the front AC pusher fan with the AC removed and don't have any issues with over-heating with the 8 vavle.  So I don't think it requires all that much to keep these little engines cool.

*part #: PC-2053 (no S)*

Another Question. Would you even bother with the A/C fan? This sucker is 1400 cfm...... I plan on keeping A/C for my zuki. Any ideas?

I would leave it on there, it isn't hurting anything and will only kick on with your AC.  With the auto switch on your electric your cooling should only run when needed and it would be rather annoying if you pulled the existing AC fan off and ended up needing it later.

Yeah im still figuring out what relay/switch i want.....not too much detail on the matter. My thermostat is brand new and doesn't wanna work until fully warmed up. Pisses me off. So its time to go back into it.

Right now it Bounces from 1,500 - 2k. until it warms up. Then the thermostat works. Then all is well. Its just annoying. Idle is 750

Did you check your egr?
That is a common symptom of clogged egr or bad diaghpram. Also check for vacuum leaks.
Also I bought the adjustable temp sensor, but people say a 190 degree is good. I put in a 180 degree thermostat my temp never got above 1/3 on the temp gauge, however that cooler engine costs me mpg and smog.

The cons, or so I have been told is they can short out in deep water.  I live in los angeles I don't know what this "snow" stuff is, can you enlighten me?

Yup, also quieter when you are rolling down the highway until it clicks on and off. I also pulled my ac so I don't have two fans on the circuit.

I removed my AC as all the fittings were loose, then took off my engine fan.  I took out the AC cooler in front of radiator, but reinstalled the fan.  Then I shorted across the the electrical connection that went to the AC separator column (?) (was next to the EVAP canister).  Now, when I turn on the AC (if the heater fan is ON at any speed) the AC Cooling fan to radiator comes on.  If the heater is ON at any speed, and I forget to turn on AC, there is a high temp switch that engages the AC Cooling fan and get me out of trouble.  Only have to keep heater on at least low speed.  I have ran with this for over a year, works great.  On normal driving I do not need to use the AC cooling fan (even in town), but when 4x, the AC cooling fan is needed.  I have left my motor idling for half an hour w/o any overheating, but western Washington doesn't usually get hot.
