Stock Coil Output
« on: July 26, 2004, 09:19:09 AM »
I haven't been able to find it in the service manual and I'm thinking it'd be around 30,000 V, but does anyone know for sure what the voltage of a stock coil is?

I do believe I remember Wild (or someone else :-/) saying that the stock output was around 30,000... but I'm not sure.

It rather depends on whether you mean the voltage across the plug or the coils maximum rated capability.  You can buy 60kV or whatever coils but that just means that that is the maximum they can deliver. The voltage you see will depend on a number of factors. When the coil is turned off and the magnetic field collapses the voltage builds up across the plug until it can bridge the spark plug gap. At tickover it probably won't be more than 5 or 6 kV, under acceleration at max. torque it will be pretty much at its highest level but on a stock motor probably not more than 15-20kV. I'm sure someone else can give you some more exact figures but bear in mind can change the voltage by altering the plug gap.
