AUTO HUB DRIVING QUESTION.
« on: January 04, 2010, 08:31:11 AM »
I have 2 '96 1.6L Trackers with automatic trannys. One has auto hubs and I'm not sure about something. As you know, you must reverse about 6' to unlock the auto hubs. But, if you're in tight traffic when it's time to unlock and can't back up, would it be okay to simply put the transfer case in 2H and continue driving until you have space to reverse? I'm just wondering what it might do to the hubs. What do you think?

Driving in 2WD with the hubs locked won't hurt anything.  I usually leave my hubs locked all winter to avoid having to lock them when I need them.

What reb said!

If's not a completely trouble-free deal - you are putting some wear on the front drive components - but if you live in an area where snow on the ground for less than a week is common it's okay.  I would not leave the hubs locked all winter unless you lived on the same latitude as the Upper Penninsula of Michigan...   ;D

We are having a long continuous snowcover event in much of the Central Midwest.  I set the manual hubs on my sweetie's 'Kick Sport to locked just to make it easy to deal with the snow-covered sidestreets.

I once forgot to unlock the hubs and drove around for months before I
remembered and unlocked them  :(

I think the only thing that happened was lost fuel mileage
