Power steering what do I need?
« on: February 18, 2010, 05:33:26 PM »
I'm going to convert from manual steering to power what do I need from the donor?Pump, brackets ,bolts ,hoses to steering box and the steering box.Now this is what I'm unsure about do I need the arm that attaches to the box (pitman arm I think is what it called) or can I use my manual one ? And do I need the bolts that hold the steering box to the frame or can I use my manual ones? Any other useful info or parts that I might need would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Pump and bracket, hoses, box with pitman arm, steering shaft, reservior.  The bolts for the box should be the same between the manual and power box.

The power steering brackets are different between the 8 valve and 16 valve engines.  So if your going from one to another you will have to do a bit of modification.

Yep, that's true.  The 16V pump sets farther forward by 1/4".  So to use it on an 8V, you could redrill the holes where it bolts to the side of the block and you would have to cut off the front bracket mount piece and redo it, or just leave it off altogether.  To use an 8V bracket on a 16V, redrill the holes in the bracket where it bolts to the side of the block and use a spacer between the front bracket mount and the block.
Of course, you could just find a bracket that matches your engine.  The pumps are the same between the 8Vs and the 16Vs and will interchange between brackets.
