Alrite I need some advice on what some of you have done to beef up the mount for the rear tire carrier. 1st I guess I should ask if ya'll think it is needed. I am getting ready to hang a factory Ford Outlaw II style aluminium rim with a Big O XT radial on the carrier soon. I don't want any adverse effects. The tire size is 235x75x15. 

The original tire is a 205x75x16 on a steel wheel. Although I haven't weighed either on I am guessing the new rim/tire combo is slightly heavier.

I looked through  the search function and didn't see anything directly related to the topic. Soo with that I though I woul create a thread and see what ya'll have to say.

 

I have had a 235/75r15 BFG AT on my 4dr for 3 years with no problems and now have a 31 10.5r15 BFG MT for 6 months  with no problems if this helps.

That helps a bunch! I was hoping that the weight would be similar and of no concern. Now I can look to other items and be of little concern of the tire carrier!

X2 -had 235 series on several of my trucks with the stock steel wheels and have not had an issue to date.

In fact without a body lift I'm thinking (by looking at the 28.7" tire on mine) you will run into lower interference with the rear bumper skin mounting a full 31inch tire on the stock carrier before you max out the actual carrier.

I will be running 4 door springs and Jeff's 2" spring and strut spacers. I went with the 235 tire to avoid having to add the body lift.

I have a Calamini winch guard and didn't want to fabricate 2" spacing brackets to allow it proper bumper alighnment with a body lift.

I also wanted to keep the tires relatively within the body limits so the Vit isn't dirty all of the time vs. when I want it to be.

All that said the tire / rim sounds like it will fit with no problem which is a great day for me.

you don't need to beef anything up. I've run 31's with 15x7 steel wheels for 3 years on the stock spare tire mount, no problems. your beef up issue wouldn't be with the carrier,they hold fine. your problem would be with the actual door mounts, eventually getting loose and breaking.

You should be able to fit 31's on the spare tire carrier without a body lift.  Not all 31's are the same size, but I can fit one of my 30's on there with about 1/2" to spare..  And the rack will support it just fine, just don't try sitting ontop the tire with it mounted to the vehicle like I did... 

I haven't mounted this yet.... I have the wheel in the shop but I am too stinkin busy to get to it right now. Once I get the center milled out I will throw it up on the tire carrier.  with nicer weather here finally like most folks I have a blue million things to do now.
