1994 Geo Tracker
« on: May 29, 2010, 06:31:47 AM »
I have a 1994 Geo Tracker 4x4 auto.I replaced a faulty modulator valve and now it won't shift until it reaches about 4000 rpm, 1st to 2nd at 25 mph & 2nd to 3rd at 45 mph. What do I need to do to lower the shift points?Any help would be deeply appreciated.

it might be the lucas treatment ,dont get me wrong that stuff rocks. and they sponser my race car. but one time i was flipping cars and added it to a mini van that worked great and after wards it would not move .... friend that owns trans shop said drain it and refill with the called for fulid.   did and it worked again.  by the way my 89 tracker dose that stuff just did a tranny service but still wont shift for first few blocks in morning when cold... good luck..

I don't believe so.  I've never hit it anyway.

I believe the modulator valves are somewhat adjustable.  Also, when I had mine replaced on my 92 I was told I had two valves to choose from, with the difference being the shift timing.

Your Tracker does have an RPM governor on the motor if that is what you were asking. I've heard the RPM 4x4 guys bounce off the rev limiter many times.

That's quite a coincidence, or something you did is making it not shift properly.
Auto tranny diagnosis can be a PITA.  Sometimes it is something simple that is the fix...something put together wrong, something not hooked up, something not adjusted properly, etc.  Sometimes you can get lucky and disassemble some of the more major parts (like the valve body) and clean them up really good and get it to operating properly again and not have to replace expensive or hard to find parts.  Sometimes a good tranny flush and filter change will get it working again.
As recommened, I would drain all the lucas out and put in straight tranny fluid.  To do a good fluid removal, I would pull the line off that comes from the radiator cooler, start the engine and let it pump the fluid out until it runs dry, shut the engine off, dump some new fluid in the tranny, repeat the procedure again.  You will need to run about 6 quarts of fluid through the tranny to get a complete fluid replacement/flush.  After you have ran 6 quarts through, you could go ahead and drop the pan and dump what is left in it out.  You probably don't really need to do that though, since what little bit of lucas that would be left in there will be pretty diluted by the time you run 6 quarts of new fluid through the tranny.
TH180 and 3L30 are other names for the 3 speed auto tranny that is used in trackicks.

Yes, there is a governor inside the tranny.

Please explain a transmission governor to me... I have never heard of that (I've never torn a auto tranny apart either). Is it similar to the governor put on engines?

I am not real familiar with auto trannys, but I believe it plays a role in when the tranny shifts.  I am not sure exactly how it does it, I just know the tranny has one.  I am sure you can google it and it will give you more info than you would ever want to know.
