35's on a sammi... Gears?
« on: June 25, 2004, 04:12:27 PM »
With 35 12.5's on my sammi, will I have to change the gears out if I want to move? Or will it go ok.

I have a 1.6 8v with a kick trans, kicker3 which does nothing for the highway, a stock sammy case, and 5.12s. My speedo is accurate, and I can do 75-80 down the freeway with about 18mpg with a Weber and a 1.3 intake. I ought to get much better when I'm done with the 16v 1.6 swap.

I have the Kicker3 also, ain't it sweet! Are you going to gear down the sami case? I have 4.16's in mine which makes low-low really nice.

Well, let me dive into this. The big question is what do you intend to use your Samurai for. Rocks, mud, highway, or Mall Cruiser ;D A samurai has a 1.3 litre motor that is a great motor if treated correctly. That means that it really doesn't care for 35 inch tires.  :-/ It only has around 64 hp so I think you can see where I am going.

T-case gears are a wonderful thing but all of them are not created equal. So many claim 6:1, 6.5:1 and 8:1 but this is all 4 lo reduction. You also need to look at the high gear reduction. Rocky Road Outfitters t-case gears offer the lowest hi range reduction on the market. Their 6:1 and 8:1 gear sets offer 24% hi range reduction and this reduction is almost perfect to correct for a 33 inch tire but it is no where near enough for a 35 inch tire (unless you stay in 3rd and 4th gear) So to answer your question t-case gears alone will not help you out for road use but will get you crawling on the trails in no time flat.

R&P gears are a great solution for correcting road speed but they do little in the lo range crawlability arena. A 5.38 R&P setup is spot on for 35 inch tires and will get your road speeds almost back to the stock ratio/speed. But it doesn't help in 4lo much at all.

I think your best solution would be to put in some 4:57 R&P gears and grab a 6:1 t-case from RRO and hit the trails. This will give you excellent roadability and a super sweet off-road crawlability.

Disclaimer: I have a Samurai with 35" Boggers and I have run all the combos mentioned above in my own vehicle ;) I do have a 1.6 litre motor with efi though :-/

No, I'm keeping the sammy stock. It works very well in high range. It would be nice to find a slightly lower gear kit for the kicker. Maybe somewhere around 2.5-3.5:1. I don't want to go as low as the Calmini 4.24:1s, I think that is overkill in a lot of ways.

real red sammi is my brother he also forgot to mention we just finished putting a 1.6 8v in place of the 1.3 :D we don't do much rockcrawling mainly just mudded up sippi holes and a few creeks ;D there's not a whole lot of rocks up this way. what are the stock r&p gears in the sammi we know all about tracks and kicks but not a whole lot about sammi's its a 91 sammuri JL

Samurais use 3.73s in the diffs, but they also have a 1.4:1 reduction in high. I translates into 5.22:1 in high.
Similar to the manual kick having 5.12s.
