Why do the auto hubs unlock in reverse? I thought I kept feeling something in reverse when I was weeling the X a few weeks ago. What are U suppose to do backing up a hill or trying to back out of a mud hole to get another run.

Just the unlocking part would be enough for me to say, YES they suck.

I would agree with this there is an actuator that slides back and forth in the housing to engage the axle, that is what makes it free wheel, but given that on the GV the front axle is turning continuasly and by running manual hubs it will save a ton of fuel, but the hubs them self from an gv are the same setup as an autohub sidekick.

OK I understand what you are doing now, but does it make a noticeable difference? I can't say I've noticed much difference with my car hubs locked or not on the highway. I don't take that much notice of fuel consumption though - if I did it might depress me ::) I'm only running with the (manual) hubs locked cos one of them broke. They are OE and have a rather weak looking plastic locking ring .

auto locking hub unlock when the driveshaft stops spinning (out of gear) and the tires are rolling backwards.    It does not disengage when you are wheeling backwards up a hill.

The GV V6 is a whole different kettle of fish, you fit the whole axle or the third member but you can't mix and match the R&Ps. I'm currently having a steel GV axle rebuilt to go in my truck. The 5:83 R&Ps have to be fitted into the Track/Kick carrier and then the carrier fitted into the third mamber, its not possible to retain the GVs freewheeling mechanism

Now I'm told the 5:83 R&Ps will fit in the GV V6 axle as long as you use the 26 spline driveshafts. I just another front diff to get the 26 spline gears :'( :'( Now I'm told I have a 12 bolt rear and I need a 10 bolt, more expense  :'( :'(
