'90 track trans fill plug extraction
« on: November 12, 2010, 10:03:22 AM »
The PO fubared the plug. A 55 torx is loose, a 60 will fit but can't tap it in due to no hammer swing room. Idears accepted  ???

That plug isn't a Torx, are you just using that because it fits
or ???

That is correct. The 3/8's square is very rounded and a 60T could be tapped in if I could swing the hammer a bit.

I think I'll drain the lube and add 3.2 pint through the top. Is it hard to pull the shifter? Or is there another way to top full?

I have only filled a T-case from the top, I don't have a 5 speed, so I can't
really comment on the fill procedure on that, but make sure you drain the
right box, not the T-case if you are wanting to do the trans.

And now because you don't have a open fill plug you need to make sure you
add the right amount of GL4 (only) lube, the GL5 will eat at synchros from
what others have posted. If you can't find GL4, look for "yellow metal friendly"
gear lube and you should be ok.

We had a really good discussion on this topic (rounded fill plugs) on here not too
long ago, did you do a search for it? I remember there were some excellent ideas
on how to solve the rounded out plug issue

No luck with search.

The T-case is full.

All I really need is how to pull the shifter on a 5 speed. That will solve my immediate problem.

Remove the inside the cab boot, remove the band on the outside boot and
pull the boot off, push and twist the metal inner piece to unlock it from the
shifter housing, but make sure the trans is in neutral before pulling the stick
just to make sure you don't have trouble later.

The shifter retainer is a bayonet catch, like early 12V lights on cars, push and
turn

You might want to warm the oil so it will flow faster into the case

You can't fill a trackick tranny from the top.  There is no direct passage from the shifter to the tranny, like there is on a samurai tranny.

yea I found out..I also found the shifter socket holds 1/8 L.. ;D

Finally got my FSMs and looked at a line dwg, pulled the reverse light switch and put in 1.5L of fresh juice. Ahhhhhhhh Happy trans.
