what gears with what tires keep it driving stock?
« on: June 10, 2004, 02:43:14 PM »
hey
ive got 31s on my 88.5 sami and stock gears
ive considered getting new ones, but all i know is the higher the number the "slower" top speed you'll have..
what size gears would make mine perform the way it did when it used to be stock?
4.62's?
and for the most part, if i bought used gears are there "good brands" and bad ones... like different steel in them... and does switching to a different ratio of gear put a lot more stress on them

4.62s with 31s work well. 5.12s also work well on the freeway, probably a little better than the 4.62s. Reason being, you have two factors to work with. The tire diameter, and tire weight with little horsepower. Ideally 4.88s with 31s. The v6 Suzukis like the auto GV and the Chevy Tracker ZR2 use 4.88s.

Ihad my Sami running 33's to start with and with the 5.12 it was great, anything smaller and that poor engine would be revving like made at highwayspeeds.

Mac

4.62's would be bang on with 31's

Thats exactly how we are while using 5.12s, with a sammy case, with 33s.
~4800rpm at ~72mph.

Nate

P.S.  I remember seeing an online calc someplace, where you could plug in your tire diamater, axle ratio and a gear ratio to give rpms.

hahahha ya, with 33s!! i have 31s so the engine would be going faster... i remember that site too, im thinking 4.62s would be pretty good, i think zukes can take the revs ok, or a lot better than they take the low end stuff

I've got 4.62's and 31's with stock tcase. 4.62's overcompensate by a bit over 10-12%. Speedometer reads 65 and when the GPS reads 58.

The extra revs make 5th gear usable on those days when there is not a tail wind.

Closest you'll get to stock gearing will be 4.16 tcase gears.

Actually, if you have an auto 2 door it has 4.62s or 4.30s, depending on how old the truck is. If you have a 4 door, the 4 speed auto and 5 speed manual both use 5.12s. The v6 auto GV has 4.88s. Not sure about the 5 speed manual yet.
If you put manual gears in a 2 door auto, it hauls ass with 31s. Putting 2 door auto gears in a manual, it would be a slug even with stock size tires.
I put 5.12s in a couple of sammies with 31s, they both worked very well without overrevving the engine much at all.
You have to remember that the bigger tires are also heavier. If you actually have a good amount of horsepower, it is no big deal. But if you own a real Suzuki, you don't have horsepower. If you have just slightly lower than the gear calc says to use, you will very happy on the freeway.
If you are concerned about revving too high, just remember where the zuki engines run from the factory. Currently, I am driving a small tired 16v 5 speed 4 door kick. It runs about 4100 at 75, same as my sammy with 35s with the same drivetrain plus a sammy t-case. Perfect power band for a 1.6 in a lighter truck like a sammy. But, a small engine can easily handle a few extra revs on the freeway.
