Auto or Manual??
« on: June 05, 2004, 01:56:15 AM »
Hi,
I'm putting a 8v 1.6 out of a manual in my auto tracker along with the axles out of the manual.  I also have 33" tires on it.  Will I be able to even move the tires with an auto and the stock gears in the rocks or even anywhere?  Our plans were to put the auto in but if its not going to be able to get out of its own way with the stock gears, then maybe we should put the manual trans in it??  Any Help would be verrrry appreciated!!!  Thanks,
                                                                        Justin
Also forgot to ask will TJ front springs work in the rear of my tracker to get some lift and jeep spacers in the front??

Actually you will be doing yourself a favor when you move the 5.12 gears out of your manual into your automatic.

Because of the extra low-range out of the auto tranny, a stock auto tracker comes with 4.62 gears.

Putting your manual differential gears in the truck will help a LOT!

You might see a small difference with 33's as I believe 31's or 32's is where the truck would feel stock again. 33's are a little larger, so, your truck would be a little slower than stock.

Make sense?

(I hope?)

Oh as for the second part of your post, Yes, with a little modification to the springs and the spacers.

Rick and Cindy Hawkin's have an auto and so do I, just remember to change the ring and pinion gears to 5.83:1 Ring & Pinion Gears and get  the 4.24:1 Rockcrawler Kit Calmini Sells and if you really want strength also get the Anvil to use with a Steel 3rd member carrier Also if your TrackKick is a 95 or earlier, you'll need to call Hawks Strictly Suzuki, and get a 26 spline long inner axle shaft, too. You can see what I have done to my 8v 1.6 liter engine at http://community.webshots.com/user/crabzuki  8)

I've got an auto lwb with 5.12's(standard with 1.6 16v autos in OZ) and 33's. The auto definately works better than a manual does with this setup but the 5.83's would bring it back to pretty close to standard gearing for me. The torque multiplication effect of the auto is better than you would think but it's certainly no street racer. I use the power mode more and the overdrive less but it still cruises fine on the open road. The low range definately lacks a little when doing steep muddy downhill descents, can you say exciting ;D It works but  gearing is on the agenda.
