'88 Samurai Head Gasket concern o.O
« on: March 04, 2011, 04:05:00 PM »
Hello,

I am in the middle of putting on a new head for my '88 Samurai 1.3L.  Everything is moving along, except when aligning up the new head gasket today one of the (what I think are oil tubes) openings is much smaller on the gasket then on the actual passage itself.  The old head gasket has a about the same thing going on, do you think this is standard, or a problem, nothing to be concerned about?  Thank You  .  Pics:

Most of the oil drains to the back of the head because of the angle
of the engine tilting to the back, and that's why the rear hole is bigger.

The most critical is that little round copper grommet hole, that feeds
oil to the cam in the head, if it's in the wrong place the new head is
going to be junk in 3 minutes, in the pics you have it on correct

Wild,

Would it make any sense to enlarge the gasket hole to the block hole diameter? I would be inclined to do so unless the design may be this way to retain some oil in this area for lubrication. It is possible I suppose....

I wouldn't modify the gasket, now if you were doing a 1000 HP
drag motor, maybe, but the stock gasket is fine and the risk of
doing something that will cause the gasket to not do it's job is
a real risk, and I wouldn't want to do this a second time because
I out guessed the guy that engineered this head gasket  ;)
