If he goes to a 1.6L then he'll have to get an adapter plate.

That would really blow the buget.

fred isn't the sammi EFI if so does the 1.3 EFI work on the 1.6 EFI that would be a badass sammi. u can find one at a junkyard for less than the headgasket kit. if u can't find one there i'm sure there are some guys here with plenty of spare parts for a good price. also contact hawk there have really great prices and are in washington state.

True, the full 1.3 induction and exhaust will bolt on to a 1.6 8-valve BUT  I haven't seen any complete 1.6 engines going for less $500 + and then you've got to buy somesort of Adapter plate kit... It'd add up fast, like you said... :)

1.6 with stock Samurai intake junk and an early Calmini (1.3 or 1.6) header

FYI: Hawk is in Oregon....  ;)

it's not really a contest, but rather bench racing turned reality to challenge the staff to buy and build something for under $1500, but after I got mine done the head gasket blew. so I've busted the budget.  I think my current plan is to just fix the gasket and then get it on the trail. I'd rather go wheeling than spend a few weeks waiting for parts.  then down the road I'll do some sort of swap.
here is what I'm considering
1.6
1.8
vw diesel
4.3 v-6

I'm leaning towards the 1.8 since it's zuki, but still different.  any input on that?

I think the 1.8 would be too spendy and not that much gain in power for the money! the 1.6 16 valve is a nice swap if you can find a wrecked 4 door tracker or kick for the parts, I think it has the most bang for the buck and trail tough has a special on the install kit for them on now, there are vids on pirate of a samurai beating down a 690 h.p. jeep in the sand drags and winning a large trophey, also could you sell some parts off of your rig to stay in the budget to fix the head?
1987,1988,1988,1990 samurai's,  1953 m38a1,  1996 x-90,blue.1996 x-90 red.1994 2 door tracker.   only Dead Fish go with the flow.                No Hairy Nosed Wombats were ran over on the trail today.       My ZUK is Xenophobic.

Please, Please, Please keep it Suzuki! The 1.6 16-valve and the 1.8/2.0 Swaps will get you the power you want, at least I think so anyways. :) All three of these swaps would use the same adapter plate to the transmission, however, the 1.8 and the 2.0 will need custom flywheel work and other modifications to make them work. The 1.6 16-valve swap is becoming quite popular so that means more vendors are supporting/offering it and there is more help amongst the enthusiasts group that has done it.

Having said that the 'being different' part is cool too. Another possible option is the new 2004 Aerio 2.3 liter 4-banger it is a bored and stroked 2.0 (same family as the 1.8 ) that would fit in there as well. That would be cool / cutting edge/ one of a kind...

Good luck, Eric

Eric, did you buy an adapter for the 1.6 or did you run the sidekick trans?  How did it go (the swap)?  I am thinking of the same deal. 1.6 w/1.3 head.  Thanks, Jeff 8)

I've run both ways that you have suggested. The 1.6 w/2WD Sidekick transmission, short jack shaft and Samurai t-case. The tranny and t-case retain the same mounting. The 2WD tranny is crappy off-road as it has a real bad time of leaking out of the shift tower when on inclines, running out of oil, and blowing up. I wouldn't recommend it and I think the reason you don't see anyone doing that any more is because of this problem. On that green one, GI JANE project, I used the Calmini adapter kit and a Samurai transmission. The Samurai flywheel, clutch and pressure plate is used in this swap, it works well.

Whew... short answer long, eh! :)
