needing a muffler. sugestions?
« on: June 07, 2011, 10:46:27 PM »
alright, i need a new muffler AGAIN, Ive been changing out to factory replacements but they only last so long till a log or rock grabs the edge of em and rips them off the truck.

im looking at bending up a new rear over axle pipe from 2" and switching out to a baffle bottle muffler (small 4" round muffler) interior has offset tubes, slightly better then a straight through glasspack. hoping it isnt going to be TOO loud. anything better then straight manifold to cat to nothing is better.

definitly wont be sounding stock i know that, just wondering if anyone had tried something like this or if i should try and do a standard turbo style muffler tucked up to the floor a bit more (no body lift)

with the bottle its a smooth transition from before to after, no shape edge for anything to snag on. i just dont see me having enough room to tuck a turbo style up to the floor.

if you go off road it should have baffles in it, I run flowmaster or magna flow if I want to tone it down a bit.  they take a beating too.

The "El Cheapo" my local parts house sold me was a single piece from the Cat flange back.
But it has this roughly triangle  shaped "Skid Plate" piece factory welded from the exhaust pipe
to the leading edge of the muffler. Seems to be working.

I have done more damage to the "Over Axle" pipe as my Spotter helped me back right
dead center into a Boulder folding it up, all most pinching it off.
2 come-a-longs to stretch it out and it runs OK now, but sometimes it has that Old VW Beetle sound to it!

On the SJ I run a pipe back from where the cat was, a 45 degree angle up, have my muffler mounted, then angle the pipe another 45 degrees and run it out the back of the SJ.  Works great.

Remember to check with the regulations on where you wheel when you are building your exhaust.  A lot of states require a Spark Arresting muffler, aka one with baffles so there is not a direct path between your header and the end of your exhaust.  So Cherry Bombs won't necessarily work.
