Torque on strut bolts after camber bolt installed?
« on: November 12, 2011, 11:53:08 AM »
I just installed a Raybestos brand 1 3/4 degree camber bolt in the upper strut hole on each side of the Tracker.

The Factory Service Manual says the lower original 17mm bolt gets 70ft/lbs of torque.  The instructions for the camber bolts are a bit vague and seem to be saying it, as it has a 14mm head, gets 100ft/lbs.  Is this correct?

I have done this before but it's been years and I used different brands then so I can't remember what I did the times before.

I would say torque the cam bolt as the instructions that came with the bolt say.

Ummm - the original strut bolt is 12mm - the camber bolt is less than that - 100lb-ft sounds high - I'd say no more than 40lb-ft - this figure comes from a Mitsubishi FSM and is the torque specs for a high grade 10mm bolt.

Edit.

I just found the instructions for my Engall's camber bolts - they say 20-40 ft-lbs - seems to confirm the Mitsubishi derived figures

Further edit  :-[

I misread the Engall's instructions - the 20-40 ft-lb torque figure is a preliminary one - the final torque for that size (12mm as used on the GV) cambolt is 55 ft-lbs.

Mine lists 60ft/lbs for a 12mm bolt.

Guess I should lower that then.

Makes no mention of a 10mm anything. :-\

The instructions that came with the camber bolts (#99.9.007 ) I fitted to my X-90 say 55 lb-ft.

Well, after digging through Raybestos's very confusing website I found that there they list it as a 12mm bolt.  I guess because it replaces a 12mm bolt.

That makes it get a torque value of 60ft/lbs according to the instructions.  Guess I'll go fix that then.

Here's the thing - most of us, when we think of a cam, we think of an eccentric (which is defined as deviating from a circular shape) - the cam lobe on a cam bolt has a circular lobe, the exact diameter of the bolt it replaces - what makes it a cam is that the remainder of the bolt has a smaller diameter with an offset axis - the "secret piece" and the key to how it works is the tabbed washer, which has an inner tab that occupies the space left by the reduced diameter, forcing the bolt to function as a cam as you rotate it.

So yes - it's a 12mm cam bolt but not just because it replaces a 12mm bolt, but also because the diameter of the cam lobe is 12mm - so if you ever have a cam bolt and need to know the size, just measure the cam lobe - or - if you need a cam bolt for a vehicle that is not listed, just measure the diameter of the existing bolt - which by the way is how I learned this - I needed bolts for a Mitsubishi Pajero iO - a little 4WD about the size of a Vitara.
