'99 Tracker 2.0 Idles Rough, drives fine.
« on: March 31, 2012, 02:22:04 PM »
Had this trucklette for a couple months now. '99 2-door 2.0 automatic. It's my daily driver used to commute 230 miles round trip  3 times a week. Started noticing a rotten egg smell but it seemed to be running fine. Figured the cat was on it's way out. This past thurs, I drove it home just fine, but when I got off the interstate and got to the stop sign at the end of the ramp it began to stumble/ misfire. it drives just fine under power, but idles horribly. Friday morning it was doing the same thing and the SES light came on. I have a new cat & downstream O2 sensor on order & it should be here for next weekend.  Before I put the new cat & sensor on, I need to figure out what caused the cat to burn up & what is causing the SES light. I went to Autozone to get it scanned, but the person I dealt with had no clue what she was talking about. "oh, if it's the 'service engine' light you need a tuneup, the 'check engine' light is when we scan it for codes. You should clean your mass airflow sensor, that'll take care of your rough idle" Didn't think she even knew what a scan tool was, so I left with no answers. I changed the sparkplugs & air filter 3 weeks ago.
A buddy at work has a scanner but I can't get to it 'till monday. Untill I get it scanned, I'm kinda in the dark, but I'd like to be able to make it 115 miles to work on monday morning. I did clean the MAF sensor & disconnected the negative cable to clear the code.  Started her back up & no change. PCV valve is fine. The cat was plugged & the downstream O2 sensor was all crudded up. For now, I cleaned out the cat & tried cleaning the O2 sensor. None of this has gotten rid of the stumble or the SES  light . I know if the CTS is bad, it will cause the truck to run rich, possibly what caused my cat to fail. I can pick one up cheap, but I was just looking under the hood to figure out how much of a pain it would be to change, but I can't even find it! Where did they hide the darned thing, and how much of a PITA is it to change out?

Made it in to work this morning & put the scanner on the truck at lunch. Turns out it was throwing a code for cylinder 2 misfire. I unplugged the coil for #2 with the truck running & there was no change in how it ran. Put on a new coil pack & now all seems fine. Found out with the scanner that the CTS is working fine, but both O2 sensors are shot. I already have the downstream sensor on order, so now I need to get the upstream as well. Had the moron at Autozone just run the scan on saturday like I asked, this could have been taken care of days ago. Hopefully after all this I'll see some improvement in fuel economy. I've been getting 24 MPG on average, so we'll see....

24mpg on average - I don't think it gets much better than that.

I'm getting 24 MPG with 2 dead O2 sensors & my exhaust smells so rich I think it could ignite. LOL. I'd have to assume it would do better with everything in running order... Here's to hoping.

That's not too bad.  I get 26 with my 4 door 2.0 5 speed. It's got 108000 miles on it, still have the original plugs, no misses, no problems.  I figured I'd just leave it for now. ::)

You can purchase your own OBDII scanner for 25$, and there are even some gizmos to use with iphones to read codes etc. If you are going to be doing any work on your own vehicle I would snag one, it makes life so much easier, LOL

what is a "CTS" by the way? I cant seem to place that abbreviation.

Coolant Temperature Sensor - on a 2.0 it'll behind the head on the intake side - it's hard to see, but not that hard to reach, although I've never tried to remove one.

Still waiting for my cat from Partsgeek.com.... Almost 2 weeks already, this is ridiculous.  >:(   I saved $65 ordering it from them, but I need it NOW!!!! At this point I would have rather paid more to have it sooner.  I did change both O2 sensors and the trucklette is running much better. All sensors are checking out fine on the scanner. I did have a strange spark plug failure the other day, though. The center electrode on the #4 plug broke inside the ceramic and dropped down onto the 'fork' electrode. That resulted in a flashing SES light and an extremely rough running engine. I've never seen that happen before. Thankfully the broken piece didn't drop down into the cylinder!!!!! Put in a fresh set of NGK's, reset the computer and all is well.

After jerking me around for nearly 4 weeks,  Partsgeek.com sent me a refund today with no further explanation. Needless to say, I will never be ordering from them again! Now to shop around again for a catalytic converter.
