Had this trucklette for a couple months now. '99 2-door 2.0 automatic. It's my daily driver used to commute 230 miles round trip 3 times a week. Started noticing a rotten egg smell but it seemed to be running fine. Figured the cat was on it's way out. This past thurs, I drove it home just fine, but when I got off the interstate and got to the stop sign at the end of the ramp it began to stumble/ misfire. it drives just fine under power, but idles horribly. Friday morning it was doing the same thing and the SES light came on. I have a new cat & downstream O2 sensor on order & it should be here for next weekend. Before I put the new cat & sensor on, I need to figure out what caused the cat to burn up & what is causing the SES light. I went to Autozone to get it scanned, but the person I dealt with had no clue what she was talking about. "oh, if it's the 'service engine' light you need a tuneup, the 'check engine' light is when we scan it for codes. You should clean your mass airflow sensor, that'll take care of your rough idle" Didn't think she even knew what a scan tool was, so I left with no answers. I changed the sparkplugs & air filter 3 weeks ago.
A buddy at work has a scanner but I can't get to it 'till monday. Untill I get it scanned, I'm kinda in the dark, but I'd like to be able to make it 115 miles to work on monday morning. I did clean the MAF sensor & disconnected the negative cable to clear the code. Started her back up & no change. PCV valve is fine. The cat was plugged & the downstream O2 sensor was all crudded up. For now, I cleaned out the cat & tried cleaning the O2 sensor. None of this has gotten rid of the stumble or the SES light . I know if the CTS is bad, it will cause the truck to run rich, possibly what caused my cat to fail. I can pick one up cheap, but I was just looking under the hood to figure out how much of a pain it would be to change, but I can't even find it! Where did they hide the darned thing, and how much of a PITA is it to change out?
