Yeah I have been watching Doomsday Preppers on Nat Geo.  I am NOT a doomsday prepper but the EMP(electromagnetic pulse) thing got me thinking about my 16v tracker. What electronic/electrical devices would possibly be damaged during and EMP that would prevent my vehicle from running properly or at all.  My research says that most modern gas powered vehicles will run after EMP if they are not running at the time of the event and are not too close to the source of the EMP.  The one ceveat is the vehicle "... may need to be started in an unconventional manner."  I'm thinking that the ECU, TPS, and MAF could certianly be at risk in an EMP event but how about a list of other componets that might be damaged?  Thanks guys.

Just get a Samurai with a weber carb and keep an extra dizzy in a lead lined box.     Problem solved.   

I have seriously been considering it but I need 4 doors to haul the kids.  I have owned samurais and 2 door trackicks in the past and loved them but with two kids a 4 door sure is nice. 

That's a very interesting question, and I'd like to know the answer as well. Not a " doomsdayer " myself, but I ALWAYS like to be redy for anything.  Oh, and I dn't think your crazy at all. 

Any electronic/electrical device will fry if not shielded or hardened, so you will need to store a alternator, battery sensors and a ECU in a shielded container. The container does not have to be lead lined, there are other shielding schemes that will work just as well. It would be eaiser to store a complete engine with sensors, ecu etc together. Most fuel pumps should survive in a full tank of fuel.

Get a early 8valve and go with a myside2 and store extra ignition/battery/sensors.

Swap in a mechanically injected diesel.

If a EMP blast hits dont forget the gas stations can no longer provide fuel in the conventional manner, make sure you have equipment to retrieve fuel from the underground storage.

 If someone detonates a nuke in the atmosphere, causing an EMP. You problems are going to get real bad real fast....Boxcar... retired Naval special warefare........

You're crazy.

Only programmable memory units are too sensitive.  Alternators will live, batteries will live, it's computers that will stop working. 

You could go for a mechanical diesel conversion.

Just an Idea because I haven't taken the time to look up what a EMP is, or what it does,
but, would a well grounded ocean container be a good enough electronic shield, or maybe add a "Expanded Steel Screen"
a few inches from the exterior sides as well to help defuse this wave?

Besides it's a cheap single car garage.

From what I have been reading most people who seem to be "In the Know"  feel like the likelehood of a EMP event is pretty low, and If one does happen it will likely not be widespread or intense.  In other words if you are living in a city over which a powerful nuclear device is detonated NO electrics or electronics are safe, but miles away in rural areas there will be less damage.  I live in the rural area so I my plan is to protect the most vulnerable items.  I need spares anyway right?

Lucky for me i have an 87 samurai with a weber carb setup so ill be good to go if an EMP goes off anywhere near me.
