It's been sitting . . need carb recommendations
« on: June 19, 2012, 11:03:56 AM »
So, I've had my 87 Sami since it was born and it's been parked due to emergency brake problems for the past 5 years. I have a Weber carb on it, which I love. I drained the old fuel and put new in. It runs and purrs like a kitten while idling, but after traveling down the road about 50 feet it chokes out. I'm thinking it just starts sucking in air and can't keep running.

I'm going to try replacing the cork gaskets between the Weber and the engine this weekend, but think the jets and bulb in the carb may have dried out and it needs to be rebuilt. Local place wants 140 just for the carb rebuild so I'm thinking a new carb might just be the better option. My ex bought the first carb, but I have no problem doing the pull or install .. but not quite sure what I'm looking for in a new one.

Any suggestions?   Thanks, Kat

Try a myside? I read conflicting feedback about webers, seen decent comments about My's myside carb set-up. I also know he is very helpful and available to contact with any issues

And what about the handbrake- still an issue? If so, ask away...

I hadn't heard of a myside. I'll google it. Up until I parked it, the Weber was awesome and the power was great. Would zoom up Seattle hills past any other Sami's. Also very reliable. Just doesn't help to not use it.

Handbrake is still an issue. Luckily it's very flat here so I'm going to keep it disconnected for a bit until I can't figure it out or replace it. I'm not a fan of not having it . . but it's not the highest point on the priority list.

Thanks!

Post up your pics on the handbrake and maybe someone can help.

Webers have rebuild kits, might not hurt to rebuild your carb. Not too difficult, just need to keep track of all the pieces. Might come with new base gaskets also. Mine were not cork on my '74 toy a few years back.

Does it idle ok? you can spray around carb base (I won't suggest what to use, but I use carb cleaner very carefully) when engine temps are low (on startup) and see if base plate/plates are leaking.

Sorry, I got efi and am *Sami-new. (*had to edit that)

Good luck- and points for trying to fix it yourself.
