Clutch Pedal Assembly or something like that
« on: September 10, 2012, 01:40:14 PM »
I have a 1988 Sammy stock that I just had the clutch replaced. When I was driving it home a couple nights ago I lost first and reverse like the clutch was going out already.  I decided to limp it home and when I got a block away from my house and then no resistance to the clutch at all. There was a piece that broke off around the clutch cable or something. The shop that did the work on the clutch advised that it was the clutch pedal assembly, and that they had noted on the paperwork that it had been broken previously and welded improperly and was needing to be replaced. Other than on ebay, I have not seen any mention of a clutch pedal assembly, and rather than replace with OEM, if it is a weakness, I would rather replace with an aftermarket that will hold up better since I plan on using my Sammy as a hunting vehicle and lots of off road and pulling my small boat to the lake and putting it in where there is not an improved boat dock.

Thank you for any assistance.

I would be curious to see a pic of where it broke as I think the OEM Sami clutch assy seems to be fairly well made.  I haven't seen a aftermarket replacement but I have no doubt there is probably one out there.

I will be taking it off within the next couple of evenings. I work 10 hour days so by the time I get home, I am usually zonked. I did find a place in Trussville, AL that said they were familiar with what happened and could probably fix the break by welding it back properly.

When I get it taken apart I will post the pictures.

There are no aftermarket replacements that are a bolt in intended part. I have seen this type of failure on sammis and track/kicks many times. You will need to repair the original part or contact a salvage yard or a shop like LROR or TT for a replacement. Also make sure the throwout arms bushings are not shot and you use a high quality clutch cable. (also the cable and pedal do not like high clamping force performance clutchs).

Attached pics of the assembly and the broken piece. My problem is where the piece that connects the clutch pedal to the cable broke has been welded and jacked up all of the splines. I am thinking I am going to have to replace this entire part or at least cut the clutch pedal out and replace it with another one if I can find one.

I found a broken one of those in the glove box of my Sami when I bought it. Last time there was samurai at the junk yard, wich is never, I grabbed one of those as a spare.

I took the pieces to a performance shop that welded it back together. It works great, but now I am going to have to get the clutch cable adjusted. I am thinking I may have to get a shorter cable because my clutch pedal has gone from not getting enough travel to too much travel.

Do you say that because your pedal is too high? When I got mine the clutch pedal was higher than the other pedals, I think when that part was replaced they didn't set it in the right position on the splined shaft.
