lockright locker?
« on: September 20, 2012, 07:22:48 PM »
have any of you guys used these before. they look pretty good and i like how they will ratchet when your going around a corner with low torque so they dont ware out the tires as bad as a spool. if anyone has used this let me know or if anyone knows something good let me know.

thanks

I have them front and rear.  I like the one in the rear, but hate the one in the front.   The one in the rear clicks a lot when turning, and sometimes pops, but you get used to it.   The one in the front makes steering a bitch when the hubs are engaged.    When I get the money saved I'm going to get a ARB or something along those lines.     All in all, they have been good lockers and very strong.   Best thing is, the locker in the rear works so well I very rarely need to put in 4 wheel drive.

A huge help with having a slip/ratchett locker up front is having twin sticks in the TC, that way easy trail sections that are a bit twisty are more easily drivin in 2low vrs 4low.

I am currently saving to import a pair of Kaiser lockers for my Sidekick, only slightly cheaper than ARB's. They are always "on" like a ratchett/slip locker but without any noise or popping and as easy to drive in the curves and twisty trails as a open diff.

Do a search on lockrite, the set up though simple is important.  Some (me included) couldn't get the ratchet th function properly.  They do increase your traction in off camber spots.  I would not put one up front.

ARB's are expensive but are so much better.

i wnat arbs but i am only 15 and dont have the money. i worked over the summer and got 1400 saved up for my samurai sas on it and i want the rear locked. so im going for a lockright or spartan rear. gears, and then once i have a lot saved up a front arb and chromolly iner shafts for the samurai front.

what was wrong with the lockright? what was happening with it that wasnt right? ive heared the spartans were better is it true?

thanks

They are both what is commonly refereed to as a 'lunchbox' locker so they will have similar characteristics.  The thing you need to make sure is that you follow the instructions as closely as possible and your clearances are correct.  If it is to loose it won't lock up properly and you get a lot of popping and extra ratcheting.  You will feel it pop at random times when going around corners unexpectedly and cause the vehicle to jump around.

If it is to tight it will bind up and just not release until it does with a bang, causing your vehicle to jump around.

But if it is setup correctly it will just take some getting used to due to the new handling characteristics.  On my brothers old Samurai you would notice it when taking off from stop signs and turning or sharp low speed corners, you would get a slight tug as it ratcheted.

I had been told by Brent at TT that Lockrite lockers are no longer available for them to order as the manufacturing just recently went overseas and the zuk lockers are being dropped. I was told this when I asked about TT's built locker for the front of the Kick, they are using Spartan lockers on them now.

I was about to post this same suggestion.  This is exactly what i would recommend.  I did the rear first... followed by the front later.  No power steering upgrade (yet) and found it cumbersome to get in and out everytime to lock/unlock the hubs just to fight the steering (esp bump steer being much worse with the front locked).  If you can swing all 3 of these during the same time you will be happier i can assure you.  I decided to go the TT route vs the twins also.

Now i can creep in 2L with hubs locked and turn like any other time.  Approach a mud hole and just shift into 4L and your done.

The TT route is a 2 low modified shifter and shifter rails that uses a single stick, I personally prefer and recommend the Rock4Xfab twin sticks and seal.

I have a Spartan Locker in front and really like it. It pops some but nothing very loud. No adjusting to do with the Spartan.  It took me less than 3 hours to install by myself. I have power steering so it isn't that hard to steer locked. I would recomend it.

okay thanks i think im gong with the spartan in the rear and open front for now. i want to do twin stick but i dont know if ill have the money after i get the gears. i like it better than the tt but i like how tt is free. i can only work in the summer because of school and all i have saved is 1300. i need to do my sas soon as well so for right now its just sas, and lockright. but if i can manage school and work gears will come soon.
