Need help removing selector handle
« on: March 06, 2004, 12:14:10 PM »
Ã‚  I need to remove the center consol plastic parts for a much needed cleaning (everything is heavily coated with thick syrup from the previous owner's repeated soft drink spills). This is a 94 Tracker with an automatic transmission. The selector handle is "T" shaped with a release button incorporated on the left (driver's) side. The handle is retained by one small phillips screw located on the front bottom of the handle. When this screw is removed the handle will side up but not off. Something is catching. Rotating the handle a 180 degrees in either direction and pulling doesn't help. What is the proper method of removing this handle without damaging the spring release mechanism? Pushing on the release button doesn't seem to help either.  ??? Thanks!

Oops, I just found another very recent post regarding this same subject. The advice given was "spin, spin, spin." When replacing this part, how many "spins" are suggested to leave the handle adjusted properly before replacing the retaining screw? Is there a suggested test to determine if the handle has beed replaced properly? ???

I wasn't always the dried out loser you see today; I used to be a moist and spongy loser!

I don't know about an official procedure (I couldn't even find anything in the shop manual about the button mechanism being screwed to the rod), but I just screwed mine back on (I'd guess about 8 or 10 full revolutions) until the button pressed in all of the way and then checked to make sure it would hold in P and could not get pushed from R to P without pressing the button.
