5.83:1 ring and pinion Q's

5.83:1 ring and pinion Q's

I have heard that the 5.83 r&p are not very strong and that you should really try and stay away from them. THe reason behing this is the teeth on them are really small and break easily? Has anyone had this problem or toi anyone who is running them what do you think about them? Also is Calmini the only company that makes lower gear sets for the Sidekicks? Thanks

Know what? That's what Brent tells me... but I had absolutely NO problems with mine, as a matter of fact I consider them stronger, and I haven't heard in any forum about theirs breaking.

Maybe somebody else can share the light on this?

Mine are still in the boxes which have Richmond Gears printed on them.

im getting some soon too.... hard to turn 34 with stock gears (ps no i never ended up getting 4:62 gears)

It is true the less teeth=a weaker gearset. But with the low power output of a Zuk engine it isn't bad. Proper tooth contact and ring gear backlash is crucial to a long gearset life. Improper installation is the culprit of failures, 99 times out of 100.

I have three questions...

1-Dou you can fit 5.83:1 gears in a gv or xl-7 steel 3rd member,with an locker(like ARB's)?

2-What is better, gv or xl-7 3rd member?

3-Do you can fit 5.83:1 gears in a 99 and up GV rear diff?

1- Yes, but you may need new side gears (see 2 )

2-Check out Kregs thread on the housings. I just posted links there to articles that will tell you the differences.

3- Beats me, anyone ???

Well, from ARB's application guide:

Grand Vitara rear requires conversion using Vitara third member assembly


So I'm guessing there's SOME kind of difference, if you need a Vitara rear carrier to install an ARB air locker.  But if you do, then obviously, the 5.83's would also work, and it MAY NOT be necessary to swap, if you're just doing the 5.83's.

no problems with mine .I m very satisfied.
Also ,dont know if it helps, I have installed the 5,83:1 r&p s' in my 2001 model Vitara.No problems.

No problem here.  Calimini claims their 30% stronger than stock.

Even though their a higher raito, which usally means more and smaller teeth.  These have fewer teeth and the teeth are bigger in size if you compair the two.

Actual diameter of the pinion is smaller of course but like I said the teeth them selves are larger.

I also had someone tell in their opion they would break, but they never tried them and didn't know anyone who did.  I say go for it.
