samurai does the boogaloo at 35mph what is it?

samurai does the boogaloo at 35mph what is it?

 ;D hi all just got my beast legal and was driving it home and every time i get to around 35-40 it thinks its auditioning for soul train so my question is this: whats wrong with it?

i was running 9lbs pressure so i upped it to 20 lbs per wheel, still not enough? do i need to balance my rims? im about to go to pismo in an hour any help would sure bhe appreciated! 6feetofAIR

Definately check the balance. Big tires on the light rides can lead to alot of shakeing with just a little out of balance. It's probably that or your alignment is way out.

only thing about balance is that what happens when i air down to 7-9lbs wont it loose tis balance? another thing, i noticed when i grandma it (throw it into fourth around 35mph)the shake happens but if i wind out 3rd gear it doesnt happen, what does that mean? :o

You got me ??? :-/ mine shakes all the time at certin speeds. I have mine balanced, I wouldnt thing airing down would throw it out unless you slip the bead in the rim. I have always had trouble ripping the weights off while wheeling.

If you don't have a better than stock steering stabilizer on it, put one on now!!  My Sammy without the stabilizer did the same thing to the point it was undriveable.  Wheels are balanced and true.  Added the steering stabilizer and the problem vanished.  I put an Old Man Emu stabilizer on mine.

Airing down the tires won't affect the tire balance.

The gear choice issue "could" have to do with the gyroscopic effect of the crankshaft spinning at a much higher speed helping to dampen the wobble.   I noticed the same thing with my Zuk.

If you can 'drive through it' meaning if you speed up and the car smooths out, it is most likely it is one of two things. Either your wheelbearings are loose, not too likely. Or your king pin bearings are worn out. Here's the test... Jack the front end off of the ground and grab your tire at 12 and 6 o'clock try to wiggle it. If there is motion, poke your head around and look at the whole closed knuckle assembly, if it is moving with your wiggles, the king pin bearings are worn, if the wheel is the only thing moving, try repacking and adjusting your bearings.  Hawk has brand new replacement bearings.

Hey Jeff, that sort of sounds like the vibe problem I'm having (check the adventure board) but I've got a new DT stabilizer in the stock location.  I'm gonna try Eric's bearing test.

Thanks Eric for the advice, I wasn't sure where to start looking! ;)  How long do those bearings typically hold out for? Originals have 85k stock miles, never off the road, and |removethispart|@ 4k since the 32s were put on (|removethispart|@ 150miles on trails).

I'd take a SWAG that with stock drivetrain the king pin bearings last about 120-140k miles. Putting the large tires obviously stresses the parts more and points out flaws. Even more so with wheel spacers or exaggerated offset wheels.

As far as a stabilizer goes, I don't run them. I think that they cover up front end problems. A correctly set up and serviced front end wont have any wobbles, jiggles, wiggles, or anything. Of course, that is my opinion. YMMV :)

On my old sami I had to run a steering stabalizer with my bias ply tires. When the were cold at about 35 mph woble woble. When I switched to radials I had bent it so I took it off and was suprised to see the woble was gone.

Mine's pushing 300k on the stock bearings and no problems so far.  When I did the SOA, I checked all the kingpins (replaced the passengers side top with OTT Steering) and they were fine, but I still had the wobble.  I could put my head out the window and watch the front tires wobble back and forth.  Threw on the stabilizer and the problem vanished.  Part of the issue is that the stock drivetrain is set up to handle a certain amount of force being applied to it, when you go to bigger tire/wheel combos, the forces are way above what it was designed for, and very small "imperfections" in the front end get magnified, like tires slightly out of balance, alignment slightly off, wheels slightly out of true, or damaged suspension components.
