Correcting Speedometer?
« on: April 25, 2005, 03:58:29 PM »
How do you correct the speedometer after adding larger tires? I know that 5.83's would do it, but I'm looking for a cheaper option...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

You can look up a SpeedO shop in the phone book and they can regear your speedo.

I just found out mines off 17MPH :o with 5.14 gears the oldschool tranny (higher 5th) and 33's and I need to tweek it. My buddy just turnt the pointer a bit to try to compinsate,,, but the faster he go's the more he's off.

My speedo is actually more accurate since getting bigger tires!  It read about 5 mph high with the stock tires.  With the 235's it is right on up til about 60 mph.  After that it starts to read a little slow.

Well, my friend and I went for a ride the other day, him in his sammy running 215-60's and me running the Silver Surfer(31-9.50's). We reset the trip odometers withing 2 miles of eachother and after a 40 or so mile ride, he was registering 42 miles and I was registering 32 miles. Now I know if I had reset mine at the same time, it would have come out 42 to 34, but that's still a pretty big difference and is one of the potential reasons I went from getting 26-27 mgp to around 18-19 after swapping tires...

Way back in the '70's, during my rallying days, people used a little gear box on the back of the speedo that you could change the gears in to obtain the correction factor for tire and gear conditions.  I think they were outlawed when someone figured out you could bump the correction factor to 50% and only register half the mileage you were actually putting on the car.  I wonder if you can still find those things anywhere?

  that works only so much.
with 33s.5.89-1 and 513s my speedo is good up to 25 mph.after that my road speed is 5 mph slower that speedo reading up to 60 on speedo then it goes to about 7 mph slower.
the wifes is the same with 31s and 462 r/p and stock t-case.
